First time post.

I am sitting here reading all the guessing about when the dance will begin. And it is very strange that it hasn't happened yet. So I started thinking about what is different now since the last updates. Read an interesting article on cnn that references if the US goes to war with Iraq that there will be a large amount of "cyber warfare" ... the article even mentions google for war info.

Does anyone think this is why google is not updating? I know this is kind of crazy, but is google waiting to see what happens between US and Iraq before updating?

Ok, i finished my daily work. While you were talking here about how, when, why and why not, i just updated a lot of pages to be prepared for the next deep crawl.

And you?

Freshbot has visited my site 78 times between midnight and 14:18. It now is 17:28 over here.

Regarding the war-theory: if Google were to update when war breaks out, they'd have an old index. Best thing to do would be to update now, do some relaxed deep crawling for a couple of days (until let's say 15 March, my hunch for GWB's attack) and then have Freshbot get fresh pages.

...then why they haven't done that a month ago?(i iam wondering). I think somebody must have a look on the amount of keywords people search about the war in G.

Or maybe:
I think G waits a few days before war start. So they will have the last news of what's going on in Iraq and after that the only thing they will have to do is Fresh bot crawling...!Right?

freshbot is knocking things around ... 4000 visits on just one of my pages yesterday.

Stop him and let the index update!

That is one for the bookies - big money to be made on the google update start date.

rudy,

Last March (2002) there was no update. It finally came in April...seems like a total of about 6 weeks went by between updates (from February 20th or so until April 6). I would have to verify this on Brett's update chart.

Didn't I read somewhere that google's new years resolution was to have better communication with webmasters when they've run into problems?

"I still think y'all should take a few days off. :) "

...does not seem to be very good communication? There must be some sort of problem this month for things to be late like this so a simple note to us to let us know whats up could not hurt anything could it? Would it really hurt anything if we knew when the update was in advance?

Not wishing to rain on anyone's parade etc, but I think that this does not come under the "better communication with webmasters".

IMHO, when and where Google does an update is largely up to them.

As webmasters, yes we'd all like it sooner rather than later, but the reality is, only Google knows when it will be and they are under no obligation to do an update every month.

If placement in Google is the only factor determining the success or otherwise of a venture, does this not suggest that the venture itself is the item that needs to be looked at closely?

Well I agree that google does not have to say anything but I was just thinking that it would be a good move towards better communication with webmasters.

Also placement in Google is not the only factor for the success of my business, but hey, when they run 80% of the searches online they do play a large part for sure.

GG..thank you so much for at least keeping us in mind. It's no fun to wake up at 3:00am, stumble to the computer in your underwear, and hit 'refresh' to see if Google is Dancing, then to stumble back to bed dissappointed...Telling me to take a few days off at least helps me sleep better....maybe I'm sick, but so are lots of us in these forums ;) ...Thank you for gracing us with your presence GG, always a pleasure to read your posts! - even if it is to tell us to take a few days off ;)

Well, its time for me to make my first post here at WebmasterWorld, and I’ll start with an update prediction (seems to be the thing to do today). I’m guessing March 5, Ash Wednesday, followed by the next update on Easter, April 20. Hope it happens sooner, though. I’ve been holding my breath for so long that I’m beginning to get a little dizzy.

It _is_ updating really I think, we're just not seeing that highly visible backlink change. After a period of relative calm my PR bar's acting like rough seas again, up and down like a yo-yo. I get the feeling those rows of linux boxes are screaming too. A spring clean of the index.

/hell it's all been said before, ain't it just
