I'm not sure but I have a feeling that before the last update the freshtags did not stop and maybe that means the rules have changed and its not as simple as 'freshtags today = no update'

Edneil,

After re-checking the logs, one of my sites was visited by the freshbot at the time the dance started on january 25th.
FreshBot's behavior seems to have changed this month so my belief is that we shouldn't use this as an indicator anymore.

hetzeld,

I'm sure I saw a syncronisation between one of the bots, and my site jumping into the local indicies last month just as the dance was starting, but I never got any confirmation.

Did you see the same sort of thing? (hit from GB, followed by a refferal?)

yetanotheruser,

The site I'm talking about is a new one that I've put in line mid-january. That site was in Google's index for a few periods lasting less than 48 hours due to the freshbot. FYI, there's nearly no traffic (+/- 30 visitors/day) on that site.
I saw the hits from GoogleBot, but no visitor had Google as referrer on that day as it was an "not in the index" period. :))

Now that aces are low and face up, may I sticky you where to send my doughnuts? In fact just send the 30,000 or so to the PubCon. We will divvy them up there.

We now have 68 pages in Google as compared to 8 as of 2 days ago. Will keep watching... or did I miss the update announcement already? ;)

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, zan_d. Differences in results don't indicate an update, they happen all the time.

Nothing, nope, nada, zip, zilch.
Hang tight, GG said it would be a few days. Those few days would take us to tonight at the earliest. Go get some beer or take a nap. Or better yet, add content to your sites. The deep crawler will follow soon after the update.

Seems very odd there hasn't been an update yet, does anybody think Google may be working on some major changes.

PS. my english is rather poor and I do now realise I should have written,

"Are some major changes going to happen?"

C'mon, some very jumpy nerves around here - no need for titles like that.

The ODP directory update is a high risk item.

Mines one of them mat, was positive an update would occur today. Can't think of any reason it shouldn't have except Google working on some major changes.

"Are some major changes going to happen?"

Should be, I got a link from a PR8 site, with only 7 links on the page :)

I got about 10 PR8 links but if the past is any indication, only a few of them will be picked up.

Time will tell.

Since there has been no ODP update since September due to many problems and since the data and directory structure have changed so radically, there is a high risk (to google) of problems and issues caused by trying to incorporate the new data dump into the google directory.

The first "real" rdf dump which worked completely was dated Feb 19, 2003. That does not give them much time to debug problems. The systems engineers are probably tearing their hair out.

Is an update to the Google Directory usually part of the monthly dance?

If Google finds a problem with their new algo anywhere during the update process, they have to change the algo and back it out and recalculate the index. That can easily take a week or more.

Wrong. If you check backlinks, Google quite clearly is spidering the ODP, and using that in the algo. On the search engine side, even if the ODP never did an RDF dump again, Google would use new additions for the algo.

quotations,
Do you mean that sites are picked up slowly over several months or do you mean that some links are not picked up at all?

The links that didn't go up before the linking site's deep crawl won't show until the next month.

OK, why is the update so friggin late? Google's new scalable spam filters needed to be undone?

I heard the new spam filter worked so well that there were only 12 pages left in the index and 4 of those were cloaked.
