Poor GG. He must feel like Brian in Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' at times like these...

Oh well, hit the sack I guess. No doubt wake up to find everyone else cheering & my pages nowhere to be found on the face of the internet. Good luck ppl :-)

GG! On msg#46 on this thread on 2/26 you said, "Oy. Y'all should take a few days off. It will happen when it will happen. :)".

You didn't say a week! My hair is coming out in clumps, and my wife thinks I'm having an online affair with "some Google guy". :0 C'mon, go ahead & nail that button @ 100,000 posts. We love ya man!

This'll be a feature of one of those reminiscing TV shows in years to come. Something like 'Remember the noughties' & there'll be a 2 minute feature on how we all sat around 'till 6 in the morning for days on end with matchstalks holding eyelids open waiting for Google to update.. and everyone will look back fondly through rose-tinted spectacles at the wife / husband / girlfriend / boyfriend who dumped them for the milkman as a result

Ok.. Now I have the silliest of questions. Please keep im mind that Im new..

Do you all wait for the update like this out of anticipation, or is there something you can actually do while the update is taking place (besides party).

I mean, Is there actually some active thing you do while the update is going on, and so you are afraid to miss it?

rock on.

GoogleGuy,
I already took a couple days off last week after your post on the 26th. Now I have to go back to my boss and request more time off! Could you at least sticky me a note (signed with your real name) that I can give to my boss?;)

My first post in this 300+ message thread.

A brand education type new site I built recently and linked to from my commercial sites (PR5) shows up as first PR5, then PR7, then Gray Bar.

Wierd, wacky, wild stuff going on. Alas, GoogleGuy alludes to no update for a few days.

(sigh)

Zapatista,
There seems to be a lot of strange stuff going on with the toolbar, especially as it relates to new site which are not indexed. The toolbar is carrying over the pr from the previous page visited when it would normally be grey. On slower connections there are reports that you see the gray bar first and then the pr of the previous page. This may have something to do with the toolbar update (do you have the new news icon?).
Visit the Toolbar section of this site and almost every thread will discuss it.

I mean, Is there actually some active thing you do while the update is going on, and so you are afraid to miss it?

Of course there is something we can do during the update. We can check Google News even more often! We can look at our backlinks again and again and again to see if they have changed in www. www2. and www3. We can search using our favorite key words and phrases to see how our site is doing in www. www2. and www3. We can checkthese things over and over and over as they keep changing.

We can also read the messages of celebration or agony that will be posted here. We can read everyone analysis of how they think Google might have changed the algo. Let's see there has to be more. There must be some reason I am checking this forum at 2am just because I woke up and was too curious to see if the dance had started to get back to sleep without checking.

But there is a thrill to the dance. Kind of like after you bet on a horse and you are watching the race. You can't do a thing about the results but what a thrill watching and cheering and hoping. All the thrill of victory and agony and defeat is there but it goes on and on. Like watching one of those big sail boat races it goes on for days.

Gawd, what is a granny with web sites about quilt history doing here? I must be the ultimate senior citizen computer nerd.

Bear in mind that GG has *NOT* said that the update will be in a couple of days. If it happened today or didn't happen until next month he can point out that all he said was if it was me I'd take a couple of days off & y'all should take a couple of days off.

He may just think we're all unhealthily obsessing.

I think it has something to do with the standoff in Iraq! Google wants to include the news of the outbrake in its new update and give it PR10:)

Fair play to Google Guy, he has saved Bretts bandwidth charges for a few days and also allowed majority of us to get back and concentrate on work instead of checking backlinks and reading this post every half hour.

See you all in a few days ;)

I think GG meant we are too stressed by waiting and should relax, after all it also takes a few days until the new results settle!

I'm not relaxing, esp. after what I saw in my logs today: my personal website that hasn't been touched since jan 11 (full deep crawl) was back today... not a good feeling about that at all....

My new website launched early-mid February has been listed on Altavista before Google - never thought that was going to happen! Mind you only one page in Altavista.

I think we can take this oportunity to get in as much updating as we can, I know I am.

"I mean, Is there actually some active thing you do while the update is going on, and so you are afraid to miss it."

Not exactly, but there are two things to consider. The first is the deep crawl happens soon after the update finishes. When the update first hits you can notice good things or problems, and emphasize or fix them quickly so the deep crawl catches them. Second thing, the update takes a few days. If you pay attenetion and competitors don't, you have a couple day edge on them, which isn't huge but it is something.

Also, humans are born with "are we there yet?" in our nature. Future anthropoligists will view these threads as proof of that.
