My bet is that Google is making major changes to their algorithms and will take their time, making the next update on March 17th - St. Patrick's day.

Hi,

Readers might like to speculate on some connection between the late Google update and the makeover of Yahoo's results that was implemented within the last half an hour. Good luck when the update happens.

Jeremy,

I see nothing new in Yahoo! search results. Still served by Google - Do you have more info?

I've been a webmaster for a few years doing server-side programming, but am a serious newbie newcomer to the inner-workings of Google. I have access to my weblogs and have just "gotten into" analyzing them.

How will I be able to tell when the update starts?

If Google ever showed their search figures the way Overture do I wonder how many marketers would be fooled into bidding for "link:www.yahoo.com". A very popular search phrase that.

bdstreet: the easiest way to do it is to watch the WebmasterWorld homepage - a headline announcement will undoubtedly go up very shortly after it's first spotted.

The first sure-fire sign of the update is when the number of backlinks to sites changes on the alternative google servers at www2 and www3.google.com . The traditional check here is for yahoo's backlinks - navigate to www2.google.com and type in link:www.yahoo.com into the search box. When the number changes from 642,000 results then that's the update. Then you can go and check on the same alternative servers whether your site shows up, how many pages it has, how many incoming links (PR>4) it has, where it comes for particular keyword searches etc. There is usually some fluctuation in results before the update is completed and results transfer to the www.google.com domain.

"Fooled"? Actually, there are probably lots of things one could profitably advertise with that term:

  • Coffee

  • Prozac

  • Therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • Google "red button" mousepads (hey, that's not bad.)

I blame this extremely long thread on the thread starter hightraffic10 on Feb 25th.

You just watch the real update thread will only span 5 or 6 pages because everyones tired of typing. ;-)

wow. I just looked at the "is it update already" thread and its heading towards 1K posts.

I guess it doesnt happen much, or its not happened lately.

You might want to check/find Brett's google update history thread, moon phases included, that has all the dates you need.

some people are just too on the ball when it comes to G ;) too slow.

There was no September 2000 update. I wasn't following it at the time, so I can't tell you what was going on.
