Worth noting: It is highly unlikely Google will reduce the size of its index. Otherwise they'll get hit with a barage of those "enlargement" emails (if you know what I mean), and that would be embarrassing!

Nope, looks pretty much like www to me.
Thank god no. Just checked, and I'm still #3 on Yahoo for my main search term, rather than buried. Thus Yahoo had the old index.
By NO means have they done that. If they had, this site would be near the top based on PR and on page factors. The current #4 site on this SERP in -sj has NO on page text at all. The reason it is #4 is inbound anchor text links.
Shame, opportunity by google missed.
Not sure why this site has it's anchor text inbound links and you've lost yours though?

It seems random. I have 2 sites, and the other site does have it's anchor text inbound links. Other people have reported losing the anchor text on their inbound links also. It may be that for some sites it still hasn't been added in at this stage of the dance yet. Or, Google is broken and has a bug. No way of knowing until the dance ends.
Anything else stand out for your missing inbound anchor text links? Can you spot a difference between those included and those not? Lack of surrounding text maybe? That would make sense.

Is this something I should worry about since it sounds like it's happened to many others in varying degrees? (i.e. is the consensus that this is permanent or only temporary)

Another surmise - this is how the dance always occurs at Google HQ, however, this portion has never been made public before. What we usually end up seeing is the final results just moving across the data centers. However, this time we have been able to glimpse into the 'real dance' - the jiggling around of results.
maybe...the cost of moving the data across AND THEN applying the new data and filters has certain cost/performance benefits for Google. I mean in terms of the economic or management costs, which is why we see a new form of the dance.
Did you disappear from the regular WWW serps or the SJ test serps that everyone is keeps calling the new index which it really is not since all factors are not present in it?
GG has said this a few times.
If it's SJ, don't worry about it because the dance has not even really started.
After 5 days and the SJ serps have not migrated over to the other 7 dominate datacenters is a good indicator that we have a while to go yet.

my site disappeared from the main results as well as the SJ results. the site literally doesn't exist in google anymore, it doesn't even register backward links to the site.
How old is your site?
When did it first appear in the regular serps that are now showing on www.google.com?
How many backlinks do you have to your site?
And of course, have you done anthing that might have incurred a penalty?
ROFL. Perhaps this algo realizes how much it sucks, and is predicting the future. ;)
as far as penalties, the site is mainly flash with a parallel html version, and there's a necessary redirect upon entry with some text on it. maybe google finally decided to remove the site?
GG is usually vague by necessity from what I read of his posts, but from what I read that he his written about what is happening now, I interpreted it as follows:
That the SJ results would be the substance of the new update, and that sometime after that they will be more applying filters, results of deep spiders, and adding backlinks back in to fill things in as time goes on. He didn't say when, however, that would happen.
Anyway, that is what I got out of his comments about what we are seeing.
This isn't to say that the SJ serps aren't serving up spam. I have submitted at least 8 spam reports in the past 36 hours based on SJ serps.
If they are going to crackdown on spam, may as well help them find *all* of it.
I'm disappointed that my site dropped 30 positions, but it has actually moved from ~46 in the sj serps to 29 today, so I think maybe there is still hope for me yet. :)
He did say the SERPS would change once the data was applied.
Since the SJ datacenter started changing on Friday, and has yet to migrated over to the other 7 main datacenters, In my opinion, they have not put the dance into full swing.
Usually, the results of the new index will bounce in and out of the main www server all through the dance. I have not seen this in a few days and they also pointed www2 and www3 at the SJ server which is not normal either.
I thinking they are sill tweaking the system before they let it migrate.
I good indication of that is that Alta vista and Excite beat google on their own engine for search engine. That tells me there is a problem... Would you let it out the world when you can't even show up as #1 for your own term on your own engine. And of all engines to beat by, it's alta vista.
I'm not getting excited about anyting becasue I personally don't think the real deal has happened yet.
We are just taking a wild guess that the final update might be something in between what we are seeing on -sj and what is on the WWW index at the moment. All just a guess. Roll with it and see what happens. The fun of it.
If it were to end like SJ is returning now, in our case we would be pleased, but we aren't expecting anything at this point.
one of my clients is focused around holiday based business and as one is coming up, I was placing well on page 1. now when i search for said clients URL it shows up with the previous holiday results.

in the interest of full disclosure, there was some semi-hidden text on the Flash detect page, all of which was relevant to the site, but maybe Google got strict on me. And they liked me so much for such a long time...
