Indeed I am missing a PR7 backlink!
Worth noting: It is highly unlikely Google will reduce the size of its index. Otherwise they'll get hit with a barage of those "enlargement" emails (if you know what I mean), and that would be embarrassing!
;-)
Right, except for the really clever SEO's who wisely told their clients that relying on a single monthly update can be like building near the fault line...
As many have said, much of this art/science comes down to building great sites and doing your best to stay aware of SEO, so you don't shoot yourself in the foot while you're building those great sites.
But despite all best efforts, there will be fluctuation. Has the Web ever NOT fluctuated? That's part of why I love it. Come to think of it, maybe that's the problem with my relationships...
P.S. rgfdxm1...Mudville? Ouch. Sorry about your fate in this go round. Let's all work hard over next week to sort out what's up with the new algo - rgfdxm1 needs something to look forward to!
Why would they be breaking out in a cold sweat? They don't even know what the SJ server is and since the results are not being fed to www, how would they know?
The dance is not over, as a matter fact I don't think it's even begun.
Oooooh, you're right. Time for a martooni anyway...
"TRUE! nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed, not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How then am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily, how calmly, I can tell you the whole story."
-Edgar Allen Poe, "The Tell-Tale Heart"
Just because I repeatedly check to see if on a specific Google server my site has risen from the abyss of the middle of page 2 back up to #4 on page one for the most important SERP you call me crazy? That I keep checking to see using the allinanchor: command if Google is now counting the anchor text in the backlinks for this site you think me insane? HA! I tell you that I am of sound mind. How can you question my mental health? Is it not clear that I am in full possession of my mental faculties? Surely GoogleGuy will find that anchor text. I know he will. He MUST!
;)
Google has a large number of data centers a few large pipes and more than a couple maxtor 4 gb hard drives.
Given the above fact GoogleGuy is telling us that they are starting the dance, moving data, applying different filters etc.
Now what I find hard to understand is why they are "playing" with filters, algos etc in, what is in effect, a production environment? If I tried this I would end up with an odd number of testicles.
Also is it just my imagination but if this is a dance is it taking longer to filter thru the datacenters?
>Also is it just my imagination but if this is a dance is it taking longer to filter thru the datacenters?
Yes, this is taking longer to filter through the datacenters than usual. Perhaps Google has realized how horrible this index is, and this is why they aren't letting it onto www. www-sj and www-fi really aren't production servers. Considering that I've never seen more complaining about a new index at Webmasterworld than with this one, even the Google crew may have realized that this index is not ready for prime time.
How is all this affecting SEOs that are paid for delivering results? Surely, their clients are breaking out in a cold sweat and screaming bloody murder.
I'm doing great. The one SEO client I have I told not to expect much from this update. They are still at #3 for one important phrase (Was $6/click on Overture for them) and the most important phrase went from #34 to #13 as things stand now. They were actually higher at #11 when the SJ revelation first hit. <shrug>
And the majority of the new links were picked up after last deep crawl, so I anticipate better results next month.

So how long till I see the new updates on the link popularity on WWW?
This is my question too.
When I check the backlinks to my site they are from earlier this year or even late last year. They have got links to a couple of sites I stopped advertising with plus none of my recent link additions are there.
I really hope they get the links updated because my site (like many others) by the sound of it has lost ground on all its main keywords.
Don't roll this one out yet Google, get those links updated.....Please!
I must admit the number of different threads re the update and the number of posts in them has really reduced my enthusiasm to read them as i'm really busy. Can someone tell me if i'm on the right track re a summary of whats happening:
This is one of the most radical google updates.
Lots and lots of people who are proven long term SEO'ers and have proven sites in google have found there rankings for main keywords have dropped dramatically or dissapeared alltogether and/or have been replaced at a much lower ranking with an internal page rather than there normal page.
It's not yet time to panick if your in this boat?
Is this an accurate assesment?
My home page had dropped from page 4 on main keyword to knowhere.....has been replaced with an internal page on page 16. Showing the same results on sj and fi. Is there hope or should i panick?
Thnaks in advance for your help.

If you're in the above category - don't panic. Google will be working to ensure that the index favours people like you.
If you're a spammer or use other dodgy methods or feel you may be just on the wrong side of the line of SEO (where it borders being naughty), then panic.

Do people seriously pay this much in PPC?
Heck yeah. I recently played with adwords and my $10 bid did not get me in the top 10. I think I've read where people spend over 50K/ year on PPC. As long as the ROI is there it's a good plan.
The great thing aboout PPC is that there is no sweating over the montly update and results are almost immediate. There's no tweaking and crossong your fingers for the next two months to see if your tweak worked. If your tweak failed your hosed for another update.
