One of my niche sites has shown traffic (very little) from google but it is for terms that are too general to be useful
Exactly what I'm seeing. G traffic now originates from such broad & irrelevant search terms, conversion rates have gone through the floor - which I can only imagine also means an unsatisfied surfer.
Got to hand it to the googlers planting that little "over optimization" ploy was a gem.
There is no such thing as over optimization - there is just good and bad optimization.
Lets chill on the ummm "analysis" diatribes for awhile and just let things settle.

Showing on 216.239.37.99 DC, this DC for our industry sector seems to be showing 3 sets of SERPS one of which we rank well in (close to pre Florida). these same 3 sets of SERPs are being passed to AOL and Netscape but NOT Yahoo and WWW.
PR gone up from 5 to 6 and backlinks updated.
WWW2 & 3 show different SERPs again for the same 3 word keyword phrase.
WWW and google.co.uk constantly show the same SERP from the set of 3 (but NOt the one I'm ranking well in).
Anyone else the exact same as me?
My site is based in the US but all this morning all I am getting is 95% from Canada.
Not just from Google-Ca but Google-Com.
It might be just because of the update.. but I am telling you it's really weird.. I didn't even know there were that many people in canada :)
I have also noticed more hits from Canada, and even Russia. I have some links from Canada, but none from other countries. (I'm in the US)
Could they be working on a regional filter? It would be easy to have just one algo for the entire web (all languages) then feed each query depending on where the IP indicates that they are.
The only problem I could see is that the majority of the IPs that hit my sites show as comming from Virginia which is where their ISP is based. Not very local if you ask me.
One of my sites (call it wwWebmasterWorldidgets.com)is #1 or #2 for:
allinanchor kw1 kw2
allintext kw1 kw2
allintitle kw1 kw2
Searching kw1 kw2, wwWebmasterWorldidgets.com is nowhere to be found.
BUT-
wwWebmasterWorldidgets.example.com is #3 in the serps.
wwWebmasterWorldidgets.example redirects to wwWebmasterWorldidgets.com. Both have incoming links-- wwWebmasterWorldidgets.com is in ODP and Google directory, while wwWebmasterWorldidgets.example.com is not.
PR5 for index page. Sites ranking higher in serps also have PR5. 1.5 million returns for kw1 kw2. The site's been around since '99, those in the top 5 have all been around since '98 or '99.
Similarly, searching kw1 kw2 kw3 kw4, wwWebmasterWorldidgets.example returns #1, but wwWebmasterWorldidgets.com is burried deep.
Oddly, a search for kw1 kw2 kw3 returns wwWebmasterWorldidgets.example/interiorpage.html as #1, but wwWebmasterWorldidgets.com returns as #5.
Very few root domains showing on the first page of the searches I use.

[edit reason] Examplified domains. [/edit]
Not checking all DCs at the moment total results for the same term that usually returns around 200,000:
www 306,000
www2 465,000
www3 465,000
216.239.37.99 300,000
It has clearly not finished yet.
Best wishes
Sid
[added] I'm consistently seeing over 50% more results on www2 and 3 than www for a number of different SERPs [/added]

Small Website Guy:
If Google would rank like you said, we soon would see the "big sites" (eg amazon, bbc ...) dominating the serps, because everybody links to them, cause they are very popular.
Type in "books", and Amazon.com comes up #1 in the SERPs. But as far as Amazon's millions of interior pages go, the links to them are affilitae links, with each one having a different dynamic url, so Google sees the interior page with 1000 inbound links as 1000 separate pages each with 1 inbound link.
This reinforces my point that people don't link to commercial pages unless they have some kind of incentive, and Google doesn't want to reward that kind of linking. Google wants Amazon to PAY for the inbound links via adwords.
I believe that the main advantage of the internet is that small companies with good offers are able to compete agains the big ones. At usual business life thy would have no chance, but the internet offers some opportunity for them.
Google doesn't care aabout that; from Google doesn't want to reward small companies, they want to reward the most important sites.
And don't tell me that a small shop with good content will receive links, just because of the good content. If you want to get links as a small siteowner you always have to give a backlink.
No your site on the web will get ZERO links because no one will find it. You have to be big enough for people to find you in order to get links in the first place.
Google ranking like you said would deprive the small shop of the chance to compete against big ones, and in the end we have a monopoly of 3 or 4 big shops.
I don't want that, do you?
Not about what we want, it's about what Google wants. Google is no longer the small upstart, Google is the Big Business that will soon be going public.
Very few root domains showing on the first page of the searches I use.
Same here even with preferences set to 100. The only ones listed are supporting a more relevant page from the same site. Just 3 or 4 in the top 100. My index.html page is the one that always ranked well fo my main terms so this is very bad news for me. I guess I should have read Bretts Theme Pyramids paper a bit more thoroughly.
[Mods please don't snip this, I know its slightly off topic but I do think that it is pertinent]
I've noticed that the Adsense preview tool treats index.html pages differently its as though the algo does not expect it to have relevance but rather be there just to set the sites theme. Perhaps this is evidence that some of the same algo is in use here, with an extra ranking element of course.
Best wishes
Sid
It's strange: I had a friend state last night that he changed his homepage to AllTheWeb after struggling to find decent sites listed on Google. He is a member of the general public, he is not a webmaster. I have heard a few people state similar things. And this was the last update, not this current one! Google, what is going on?
And I found many sites listed above mine sites which have much less backlinks than mine.
Everything seems to be upside down.
