It's been like a day now. What's the longest it's been AWOL before?
More than a day in the past - maybe Brett or someone remembers what was the longest in the last few years. This isn't a particularly abnormal occurrence. The thing will likely be back in a day or so still jerking our strings. I'd rather they just drove a stake through its heart, honestly, at least with the public version.
I'm working off a list of sites that is like 1,000 rows long, go to the first site. Go through my normal routine, the site looks clean. I think to myself, okay what does Google have to say? My eyes go up to the toolbar and...
Gunna have a Margarita instead.
Google is an innovative and forward thinking company, no longer just 2 guys and thier friends making something great. Maybe the Google style is changing too, growing up into corporate leadership. A little less forthcoming, maybe even more secretive, but constantly working to make it better - albeit for more themselves these days. That's to be expected and not at all surprising.
A long weekend is a good time to perform systemwide upgrades. Ask any sysadmin, I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing. From the corporate view your employees are away for 3 days so there will be minimal disruption to regular schedules. The internet doesn't really take holidays - so no time is a good time from that point of view. We can only take what we get and roll with it. Maybe they're suggesting that webmasters take a holiday too.

A few years back it went 4-5 days and when everyone was convinced PageRank was officially dead, it came back. Give it some time, enjoy the sun, and it will be back by Tuesday I believe.
