Does anyone else see the toolbar greyed out for all sites? I'm not getting anything.

Honestly would not mind seeing PageRank vanish - visibly anyway. It sure would cut down on all the freakin’ "hey link to us, we feel our sites fit" crap mails.

I'm 99% positive they are just doing a huge backlink and PR update. Perhaps it's faster/easier/better if they just take the whole system down...

This could be a huge update or something.

But I would not mind the PR vanishing either because I believe it was already being manipulated.

In the past when I was deciding to link to another page, one of the first thing I would look was the page rank, but now, you look more into the real content not the number on the page.

I have seen pages where there is no real value, but it has PR 5 or something like that. I have always asked why? Because they either bought links or had many sites linking to them.

i think Google ( G ) has finally decided to knock out the SEO companies. I think this is not a technical problem, here after there will be no page rank will be displayed.

G means God, God only knows the future.

It's been like a day now. What's the longest it's been AWOL before? The only thing that could take this long is a rebuild of the database and recalculation. Could you imagine? On a holiday weekend?

Wondering - They may be thinking to start the calculation of PR with an altogether now algorithm ( as the old one is highly manupulative ). And to start with, all sites initially would have zero PR.

PR, as we all felt, has come to stay. But like good milk gone sour with time, maybe Google decided to replace it with a new system.

I dont think they will scrap the PR system altogether. Afterall, PR has been one of the highlights of Google Technology since long and they may noy like to lose it.

It is always better to improve and repair gadgets than throwing them altogether. Millions of websites swear by the PR hype Google had created, and it is not fair to drop it one fine day. This effects the credibility of Google with all the webmasters.

If they are closing PR system just because (1) No direct revenue and (2) being manipulated; then who knows tomorrow they may just close the search also as even that has been manipulated to an extent.
Afterall they may be feeling that Adwords alone can feed them for next zillion years.

Perhaps they are switching to TrustRank. I hope so, I got a couple of links from .edu site and National Public Radio just recently.

you know how people can set whatever pagerank they want?

what if people dont make it obvious by adding just 1 or 2 to their rank?

I would never exchange money for anything having to do with pagerank, but I guess if theres money in it...more power to ya.
