I have reported few obvious spam cases such as hidden text, hidden links and Google removed them swiftly. But this was not the case in reporting an intelligent spam ring involving a network of sites, all targeting a same set of keywords. This is not as abvious a case as hidden text or links, and here is what I expect a bigger challenge to Google.
Reporting hidden text/links is rather trivial IMO. Same age-old techniques. Reporting a dozen, when there are thousands, serves no purpose IMO, and Google has to improve their algo in catching those. But the kind of intelligent spam, where I saw no action, is the way to go, so that Google can improve its spam-algo to cover more offending sites in its net.
In a nutshell if 98% of your links are recips - you lost 98% of your links. With the toolbar PR update I think they are trying to discourage link hunters.
I don't see that specifically in the newest results. Specifically I see new sites with a domain time of less than 2 years registration who do recip linking taking a hit. Most of the website recipping in the genres I frequent who have a first index in G of over 5 years are doing quite fine and are still trading links actively.
Hi Folks!
It is a loooong way from Denmark to Vegas, otherwise I will be in Pubcon bombarding Inigo with very sharpe "intelligent" questions as for example; how old are you :-)
Ok. Here is something for you who live "over there" and wish to meet and chat with Inigo. Matt wrote this morning on his blog:

Light posting: Pubcon!
November 14, 2005 @ 12:30 am ·
I’m heading to the WebmasterWorld PubCon on Tuesday, and the week after that I’m in Kentucky for Thanksgiving, so it might take me a while to approve first-time commenters. I’ll be on a panel with other search engine reps on Wednesday afternoon.
Most SEOs should enjoy the Coffee Talk session where Brett will lob questions at me for an hour on Wednesday morning. It will be at 9 a.m., which is early (especially for PubCon), but I’m expecting lots of fun questions.
Finally, I often prowl around the lobby of the conference hotel late at night looking for webmasters/SEOs to talk to. Don’t be shy about introducing yourself. If you’re at PubCon, please come up and say hello, tell me what industry you work in, and give me any Google feedback you want.

This is the problem Cain, I still can't see any true pattern here, if recp's/links are harming a site or not. One site I looked at was clearly involved with either buying links or doing mass cross exchanges between sites and he's not been harmed at all - trying to get a handle on this is hard work!

Very good encouraging feedback on the anti-spam front!
Conlusion: Spam reporting to WebSpam Team is giving speedy results, and it pays off to report spam and spammers.
A BIG THANK YOU to GoogleGuy & Matt and the folks of WebSpam Team for prompt actions!

Agreed. Well said.
Its my impression and experience too that Google needs to develope those anti-spam filters/algos to match the present level and size of spam.
GoogleGuy & Matt! are you hearing us? :-)

Kind of police and thief game. If the level of interest Matt/GG and team are showing through this Jagger update extends even after the update is over, then Google perhaps can give a close chase to the spammers.
It's probably time to show examples: clean up the web of large spamers and unethical SEO practitioners then communicating on the reason why they've been penalized would help most website owners undertanding that there is no shortcut in making up a business online.
By making examples and educating website owners Google might fight spam more efficiently.
I remember the example of Trafficpower and the french SEMA7....that made some people think twice before they use either a dangerous technique or an SEo company using spam/cheats.
There will always be some spam though -
I think that it's time to fire the J3 out of jail too!
In the meantime Yahoo shot a new index tonight - looks awful - no kiding...and THEY won't fix it as of their constant behavior for a year or so.
NOTE: I hate yahoo, I think they can't build relevant search engines - They need either to recruit REAL engineers or clearly state that they want to operate the largest humanly reviewed directory because obviously automation is not going to work for them - period
I use Google and sometimes MSN - period :)
dunno why I said that but here is what I'm thinking this morning!

Where Googleguy said this?
I have to show to my boss..
Talking about spam. Sorry..forgot something which is very important to start our webmasters week with:
Folks! Don't wait to send Jagger-related spam feedback; I'd send that now. Using the keyword "Jagger3" at [google.com...] will get someone reading and checking it out. :-)
GoogleGuy help!

zimba, it will remain at *9* for a few more days at least (over the weekend at least, I expect) while people here make sure that the datacenter is solid. But I believe it will spread starting next week.

It's a good present to ask to Santa for next year 2006 Christmas..
My situation is that I have inherited two very successful web sites that both essentially deal with the same products. The sites were promoting similar products from two different companies. About a year ago one company took over the other , so I am left with the embarassing situation of both the sites comming up in the first page of serps. This was fine when they were seperate companies but now they are the same I need to do something about it.
Can I combine these two domains into one without losing too much of the PR traffic etc, has anyone done anything like this before? Or do I just brand the two sites the same and accept that I have essentialy two doorway sites for the same company?
Advice please?
