Seems like most people are discussing the ODP...

For me this has been a good crawl. I finally made it to page #1 for my main key phrase and page #2 for my second main key phrase. With all of this my page rank did go down a point on one site and up two on the other...go figure.

Now if Google would just update their DNS tables on all of the little googlebots roaming around so that my new server shows up in the fresh and next crawl.

Most people don't seem to understand the value of the directory. It's not a place for separate searching. It's a place where humans organize and value quality content sites, which then a *search engine* uses (and puts value one).

I almost agree with this.

Most people do not dig through a directory, but when the directory page come up in the serps, they will then take advantage of it.

You find it with the search engine, but you then take advantage of the (hopefully) cleaner results of a human edited category.

I'm getting different results with the Brett's update-checker again (in the Netherlands).

Yesterday they were all 665.000, now 1 is back to 632.000.

You will get different results on 1 until the dance is over depending on which data center the search gets directed to.

Is it over? the numbers are the same(again)...
<n00b>How can I check my "new" PR? Leskent (on the first page of this thread) pointed out something about adding a line to a file, but could you be more specific please? like... do I need to restart my page?... *points tag, starts to cry*</n00b>

Add this to your hosts file

216.239.33.103 toolbarqueries.google.com

and then restart Internet Explorer.

No the update is not done yet, 2 data centers are still on the old index, www-va and www-dc.

The update is still underway. This is the time to get any last minute work done on your site before the deep crawl starts.
I noticed that the freshbot barely visited my site yesterday, just 5 pages compared to a normal 25 - 30.

I see on www.google.com many changes per every 10 minutes. One site of mine is at page 14 position 1 and then it's gone. Another site my keyword phrase is ranked on page 28 then 5 minutes later on page 10, sort of wacky wacky.

Happy 2003!

Just to say thanks to the contributors to all the threads I've lurked through the last year - my new site that was first picked up by Google in mid-October has just hit a PR6. And this despite a block of pages disappearing from the index this month whilst some others came in. :) Should do better next month when a certain RDF gets sorted out...

www-zu has the new index now. And so has www-va.

<added>Seems that results are fluctuating between old and new index both places now</added>

Stefan/ALL

Please forgive me I am new to the Dance so forgive my beginner question

As it stands it looks like my site has now jumped from 5/6 position to 1/2 for the keywords I designed it for, however I still need to do some work. As one set of keywords only has me at 10 from nowhere and I have changed the page to try and get higher but need a respider.

You suggest as the update is still underway I can get my last minute chnages made on my site before the deep crawl starts.

Does this imply that once the indexes are all in sync google will re-read my site for the final index?

Hi Dave, Welcome to WebmasterWorld. [webmasterworld.com]

If you have any last minute changes to make, time is of the essence, as the regular/deep crawl [webmasterworld.com] (for the next update around the end of this month) has started.

>>Does this imply that once the indexes are all in sync google will re-read my site for the final index?

Once the indexes are all in sync, the update will be over. The changes to the current index are the result of the regular/deep crawl from the beginning of December. There will be some minor changes throughout the month as a result of the everflux [webmasterworld.com], but what you're seeing now is pretty much how it'll be for the month of January.

Hi Dave

Exactly what coconutz said, (he knows a lot more about this stuff than me).

This current Dance has been VERY good to me. I was not even in Google and now I have spot 4,6,7,8,9,10 for my keywords (which is a major company name) and a page ranking of 4.

My question is, I have many back links that are not showing up. Are all the back links in now for the update?
Also, can my page rank change throughout the month?

First post regarding Google updated was 2:43pm UTC on January 1. Google T-shirt goes to troels nybo nielsen for guessing 4:00am on 1st. [webmasterworld.com] Thanks.

Now this just ticks me off.

Last update moved to #9.

Beginning of this update, looked like I moved to #5.

However, at some of these data centers where the index is supposedly finished, here is what happened.

The 4 sites in front of me now have two listings each in the top 8 spots which pushed me back to #9.

So site A is #1 and #2, Site B is #3 and #4 and Site C is #5 and #6 and so on for 7 + 8.

I wish Google can find a way to correct that problem. Sure, that's my own self-interest talking but don't see how 4 sites occupying the first 8 spots is better for search quality.

I hope it is not true about those data centers being finished and this is an indication of how it is going to be for the next month.

I guess you now know what you have to do for the next month :)

Zapatista,
Those duplicates you are seeing indicate that it ain't over yet. I've seen those come and go during the last few dances. In the end, it seems that each site only gets a single slot.
Cheers
