What if your site was already in google with pages listed then all you were left with after this update was just the index page ie: [foobar.com...] but [foobar.com...] doesnt show up?
The site is setup so that it leads from the index to inner pages which leads to more inner pages.
Does Google has any plans to support Dmoz financially or in other ways...I personally think that Google has to return something back to Dmoz
GoogleGuy, I am the editor of the Health/Addictions/Substance_Abuse branch of the ODP, and because subcats that list drug treatment centers and counseling service lack an editor, responsibility of that devolves to me. Are you saying I suck as an ODP editor? :( ;) I will concede that having to edit commercial cats that tend to attract lots of spammy affiliate sites submitting is a much more difficult task, and weeding that out is difficult. Also, you are wrong about things necessarily being that the non-commercial parts of dmoz necessarily being really good. A *lot* depends if the branch in question is one that attracts competent editors. I was dealing with unrevieweds in that substance abuse branch that were up to 2 years old (most in non-commercial cats) because that branch didn't have an editor for a long time. I've actually got another window open as I am typing this to my ODP editor screen and dealing with a few greens that came in in that drug treatment centers and counseling service branch in the last few days and reviewing them. There are commercial areas of the ODP without backlogs. However, I concede that there are a lot of commercial cats in the ODP that have a huge backlogs of greens, and mine aren't necessarily typical.
I took your advice last night and reported the mega-spammer to Google - again...
Might just be reading between the lines of what you were saying but I got a feeling from your posts that something might happen this time (as opposed to all the other times...)They must have doubled the staff to 2 guys eh?!
I'll keep you informed. You bet ;) ;) ;)
DMOZ is not perfect but its THE BEST Directory we have
Nope. It may be the largest, but that doesn't make it the best. What's "best" depends on:
- The topic. (DMOZ may be strong in some areas, but it's very, very weak in others.)
- Whether you're looking for a data dump (sites that meet minimum guidelines for inclusion) or a directory compiled by professional editors who use quality as a factor in determining whether to list sites.
- What credentials you expect the directory's editors to have. (Lii.org, for example, is compiled by librarians, so other librarians are likely to trust it more than they might trust the ODP or Yahoo.)
- Whether a specialized directory is available for the topic you're searching on. (For many topics, specialized directories and links lists on mom-and-pop sites have far more comprehensive listings than you'll find in DMOZ or Yahoo.)
As for DMOZ, I think it's fair to say that it would be a better directory if Google had never been invented, if only because it wouldn't be flooded by spam from e-commerce sites and affiliate sites that need PageRank from DMOZ. Maybe Google should do itself and DMOZ a favor by ignoring PageRank from DMOZ listings. :-)
Thanks!

Makes most sense to me to
1) have an algoritm mark pages that have hidden text
2) have a human check the positives
3) impose severe penalties on sites using hidden text
4) webmasters will remove identified hidden text in short order
5) increase the complexity of the algorithm to catch more exotic types of hidden text

The "dance" is the pagerank update resulting from last month's deep crawl, or perhaps even the month before. The standard dogma is that it takes two months for what you do now to take effect. I put up a new site at the beginning of Nov., was indexed with PR0 in the November update, now received PR4 at this update. Patience. ;)
<added>It really helps to have good links. I have a link to my new site from the homepage of a PR5 site, so freshbot likes me and I was indexed rapidly. Don't expect this kind of results unless you have a high PR sponsor.</added>
I don't think Google's search infrastructure that powers millions of searches worldwide is so easy for an attack/hack as they have a lot of redundancy on servers/network/data centers.
That being said, there may be minor/brief tech glitches (human errors) from time to time;)
