no offense, but there has been no google update, so this thread is truly just opinion, speculation and pandamonium. i can't see any reason for ANYBODY not to post their opinion, speculation or panamonium here.
the rest of this is not targeted directly towards only you;
clearly anyone that gets overly paniced by the google update does not have a balanced approach to SE promotion. i think that this thread serves to prove one point; if one google update, or a couple of days or erroneous results show-up, and it does substantial damage to your business, then you do not have a balanced plan.
a balanced plan includes click-buying, playing the other SE's, and working on word-of-mouth through webrings and other resources.
i have to tell you that if google were to crash, it seems like a suicide watch would have to be put in effect throughout the webmaster community. i mean, how are you doing on msn? what are your ppc campaigns doing for you? how else are you reaching your targeted audience? what are your demographics, and what other surfing patterns do they have, besides looking for you in se's? are you listed in city search directories?
there are so many more constructive things that you could do to make your business more defensible.
as i said before; this thread is pure comedy...let's keep it from turning into a tragedy, and start taking more affirmitive steps towards protecting our livelyhoods. the truth is; google can do anything any time and in any way, shape or form that they want to do. yes, webmasters are important to them, but not the ones who rely on free SERPS, because that's not where they're making the money.
they want users. users drive the price of clicks. the amount of money in the ppc world is just insane. it makes sense that google would optimize for users first. yes, that does mean that the most relevant results would matter. but, guess what? if your site isn't included in the serps, the average surfer won't know and won't care. they don't know you exist anyway.
just my $.02. i will officially resign to lurker status again, unless called out on any of this.
thanks,
natch.
However, I think there is some very good feedback that webmasters and GG can take away from all this. Not to mention we get a sneak preview of the index, and a chance to recognize any problems that may affect our clients. (As I did not 5 minutes ago)
Now all GG has to do is get a spanner and fix the problem on fi/sj before it hits www :)
The seven largest search engines on the web are Google (55.2 per cent), Yahoo (21.7 per cent), MSN Search (9.6 per cent), AOL Search (3.8 per cent), Terra Lycos (2.6 per cent), Altavista (2.2 per cent) and Ask Jeeves (1.5 per cent).
Now looking at that thats a lot of traffic that goes to google, Im sure everyone has a right to go mental over whats happening with google at the moment, although im not one of them.
On another note searching for some terms on the sj and fi server comes up lots of duplicate pages, same content different domain, for one search in particular one owner 20 different domains same content, Im sure this was covered already.

1- Don't lurk. Participate.
2- Please don't presume that those who voice concern over live and incomplete SERPS, don't appreciate and employ a balanced approach. After all, who could call themselves a professional without a keen understanding of the multitude of tactics that may be employed to drive targeted traffic. Come on. Not one savvy person amongst us, would put their or their client's Internet strategy on the backs of G SERPs alone.
3. That being said, Natural, GOOGLE CONTROLS 75% of the SEARCH MARKET SHARE. SERP users are amongst the best prospects in the world, due to the pro-active pre-disposition of the user, relative to traditional forms of advertising, on and off the Web. So to say that one should not be concerned, or voice their opinion/speculate on the releasing of incomplete sj/fi datacenters, is to say that today, "I am willing to accept a 30-35% reduction (Y!/AOL)in SERP prospects. We are not paranoid, Natural. Nor are we hyper-sensitive. We are realists that want to understand the rationale that is causing such activity, so that we can make the necessary adjustments to be successful with this all important SE and Prospect base. Many of us saw major drops in sales and other measurable activity for some very important clients, today, and are worried about what tomorrow has in store. We are trying to understand as professionals, why...
4. Dance, or no dance, differing results are being pulled into AOL and Y!. That, in and of itself, should be the source of debate, contemplation, and speculation. Notwithstanding the direct impact that it is having on any one of us- diversified or not.
By the way, I don't know what you do for a living, but when it comes to Microsoft, do you go out there and diversify, or call others foolish for relying upon there technology predominately?
Not us, as Microsoft Certified Solutions Providers, we embrace it, much the same way we embrace Google. Cause in our world - Internet Strategy, if you don't, you will lose. That is if your intent is to be the best.
