And I'd like to say to all those whining about spam in this index that for some beginning webmasters who made silly mistakes in the past, owned up to and fixed them, this index may offer a much appreciated second chance. Doesn't seem such a terrible thing to me.
What this is seems pretty clear, very old data combined with freshbot stuff. The resulting mix is poor, and I assume Google is seeing that, but that doesn't mean the experiment is just going to stop all of a sudden.
We are three weeks from an update kids, take a Valium.
I have been in the #1 position for this term everyday for about two years. Now in the -sj SERPS for this term I am in the 2nd position.
There is no way these SERPS are from an old index. At least not one from the last 2 years.
jady: For me, today www is showing the same results as sj. Yesterday it wasnt. It is www that changed for me in the last 24 hours, not sj.
I think this is something to do with google's load balancing.
When you do a search in www the request goes to one of their many datacenters (which includes SJ at the moment which is why many people in this thread think it's a bit odd).
So any search in www could go to any datacentre, and sometimes to SJ.
It will therefore vary not from day to day or hour to hour, but from search to search....

There is simply too much old data for it to be an update. I have a page showing links that were gone 3 months ago. Also, there are tons of previously banned pages showing.
The only interesting questions are why they allowed this testing index to go "live" on www briefly and what are they testing.
An uneducated guess about all this....At some point Google is going to be integrating fresh results into the index and updating PR on the fly eliminating the need for a monthly update.
www-sj is testing some portion of this process which would explain the old 'stale' serps mixed with the brand new recently crawled pages that make this curious index.
I think that will prove to be a very insightful guess.
Old database with added freshbot pages but without deepbot pages.
Some fresh pages are a week or so old and others a month. These don't even show on www.
Gives very strange results from a user's point of view. Searching for a person's name I find a fresh page pointing to a page about this person on top but the page itself (on the same site) cannot be found.
