The five different servers are...
216.239.37.147
216.239.37.99
216.239.39.99
216.239.37.104
216.239.41.99
SO, when going to www.google.com (today) you will be sent to one of the 5 IP addresses above for your results. This is a "random" redirect. Any fluctuation you see is a difference between those servers.
If you do not wish to be redirected you can go directly to any of the above by entering is [216.239.xx.xx...]
NOTE:pinging US servers/datacenters does NOT refer to .akadns.net
Possibly. Particularly if Google called this test just the "new index", and gave AOL a crack at it first. If you think about it, if Google is showing its latest, improved index on google.com, and AOL is fed the old index, this would mean Google would be competing with AOL, and keeping the good results for themselves. Now if Google were to feed AOL SERPs that AOL felt were inferior, AOL likely would take its business elsewhere.
yes, but remember that this filter is being rolled out on a selective basis. even if you keep refreshing there may be no difference in the serps you watch. this however, does not mean we are not seeing the further staged roll out of a highly selective florida filter. we are. and its clear to many of us.
Personally I moved from #8 to #3 for my main keyword (pair), but if they woulda quit a couple days ago I was at 2nd.
But for my particular keyword, My site really should be 3rd and for the first time EVER, google has the right three sites for that keyword pair AND has them in the right order.
That would basically be my "SERIOUS algo analysis" thread I have started after other updates. However, before doing that I would like to be sure the update is really over, and not still a work in progress. IOW, if this is a Google Dance, then there might still be some dancing left to be done. If so, analysis is premature.
absolutely agree, we have been here before. lets wait a while
>>Real nice move how many PHD's does it take to put you outa business? One too many!
ooh handbags children ... now now lets not lower ourselves!
Going live? I am seeing some movement on several search terms that I track. But, I saw movement at least two days ago. Mostly nothing huge, but a few sites have left the top 10-20 (not mine, so I didn't track them down).
I am seeing differences between a standard Google search (i.e. not defining the data center) and what is returning on Yahoo - and no I am not seeing Ink on Yahoo, but rather something very close to the 216.239.37.99 results.
Liane, themes might be important, but pyramid explains the strength of a well themed site's index page better, IMHO.

I wouldn't know except for the fact that I've seen several of my own sites jumping around in the serps for several different keywords at least since last sunday. I don't really track any other sites as to their position in google... just the ones I'm responsible for. Mainly I check www regularly from 4 different machines using 3 different ISP's - all in the southern US.
And.. since one of my sites has been 9th, 2nd, 8th, 2nd AND 3rd, 5th, 4th, and now 3rd again... in the past WEEK... I'd say heck yeah they are doing an update, and you can tell it by looking at www from here.
GoogleGuy in post #160 confirmed this is indeed an update. The open question now is whether this is a dance in progress, or these are the final SERPs, and they just have to move to the other datacenters? I remember one update where I thought it was over, as the new results were on almost all the datacenters. However, at the last moment before the dance ended, some SERPs changed dramatically. Thus, I'd say that until this index is on all the datacenters, don't assume these results are final.
