Monthly updates were like consummation of our relationship with Google. Currently I remain somewhat unsatisfied.

GoogleGuy promised us one last dance but it is beginning to look unlikely. The question now is when will the PRs be reset.

I disagree. History shows that GG is true to his word, even when he is very vague.

This up coming weekend would be perfect for an update. I say Thursday night (late) or Friday morning for you UK guys.

Tha backlinks have not been updated.

Still seeing PR0 on new URLs (the whole site structure has changed in my case). The new pages are in the index (deepfresh-crawled after Esmeralda) and ranking well, though.

Let's wait and see how and when PageRank will be updated.

Where did he specifically state there would be one more dance after Esmeralda?

The only thing that I remember GG saying about another dance was that after Dominic that changes were going on, and that his expectation was there would be one more traditional dance after that. No promises, but that he thought it was likely. That happened with Esmeralda. Since then, GG pretty hasn't said much. I do recall one post where he seemed to acknowledge that we were in a contnuous update era.

The theory of continuous update with periodic recalculating of pagerank makes the most sense. It makes perfect sense. deepcrawl/freshbot are combined, and we're clearly seeing that already, and periodically pagerank will be updated which will rejigger results somewhat.

Correct, I believe he said it on or about May 20th, give or take a few days.

BT,

Well, we'd had 5 threads started yesterday about this subject that we didn't approve. I thought we best check out the landscape and report back to the mothership before any more reports came in.

Dude, see my post waiting for approval...

Looks like www2 went live across all DC's but FI is a tad different.

It may be hard for some of you to see if it is a continues update or not, but I can see clearly it is NOT continues. I have a newer website that was added this past update (3654 pages) and the backlinks nor PR has change since then. I since then know about a couple 100 websites (PR 4 and above) that added links to me with more being added everyday.

The only thing that is continues is the freshbot data, but when it comes to backlinks and PR we are still in the traditional update. Get use to it.

I know I'm about to pull out the few hairs I got left on my head just waiting for it, for crying out loud it has been 6 weeks. Just calculate what data you have Google and call it an update!

"History shows that GG is true to his word, even when he is very vague. "

haha. i somehow think that's an oxymoron.

GG is ALWAYS vague when it comes to what's up at Google.
but of course it's understandable.

don't come here for trade secrets. either google's, or webmasters'. you won't find them.

to help out with basic understanding, issues, and good solid general optimization advice, this forum is great.

Jason...I think with the new google we have to think in terms of backlink/PR updates and significant SERP updates. It seems we're all talking about a continuous update of the latter.

Exactly. The average user doesn't even know how to check backlinks, and doesn't have the Google toolbar to see PR. Google isn't updating these continuously, as they are unimportant.

Yes, well the dealio is that I'm not a newbie here and the drop in rank across all DC's make no sense for what I watch.

Page has always been squeky clean- even GoogleGuy can hand check the site. None of the competition is in a state of flux- just my client's site.

They haven't lost links- they've gained valuable links from good sites that are even on topic to their industry.

If there was an algo tweak for on-page factors then other top ranking pages would have changed.

It's almost like "if page x increases >25 spots then = SEO".

If SEO then GoogleWack them down for no reason.

Will they live- sure. Kind of odd a site that was ranking #35 or so with no SEO at all then gets to #6 for weeks...pops out to #27 after gaining links with good anchor text for on topic sites.

I see no rhyme or reason and that's what is most annoying.

That's probably what Google wants.

hmmm interesting. not much of one for conspiracty theories, but doesn't it hold true that spammers typically look for the quick fix, trash-it, move on types of scenarios? so, perhaps that's exactly what is going on; sites that rise to the top at a very high rate, get temporarily devalued, until x number of days have passed, making google an unattractive target for the hit-and-run spam type operations.

this could be especially true if algos are being tweaked in preparation for rolling updates. that could be a foreseeable problem with rolling updates, and this could be a filter that has it's nob twisted a bit too far to the right.

just thoughts.

Let me assure you, hit and run sites, as you put it, are still prominent and well unfortunately due to freshbot.

What may be worth discussing, is that there may be a Spam threshold where Google will dampen for sites that suddenly appear with xx links, but at xx-1 you are styling ;-)

Any kind of update would be nice... I have new and old sites with good backlinks. I also have older sites that have not been updated for 60 plus days.

I've said it many times before, and it still appears to be true, Google is a rollercoaster. It may not be quite such a wild and scary ride as it once was but you still have to hold tight especially with new sites.

=========

QUESTION
My understanding of www2 and www3 was that these were provided as a clue to what will be happening at the next dance. If we have a rolling update, are these just going to be a week or two ahead of the game? Personally, I've never really bothered looking at their results but given the thread title, I thought I should have a quick look.

Kaled.

PS
My website appears to be moving from 5 to 3 on my main key-phrase. However, my Toolbar PR has dropped to zero yet again.

My site had a HUGE jump today. For months, it has been doing the normal small movements (never moving more than 10 spots up or down), but this morning it jumped up 44 spots to put me squarely at number 5. I'm not sure if this was due to my efforts or just that Google has finally used some information that it had not used previously, but I am thrilled. Sure hope it sticks. FYI - my PR and backlinks haven't changed a bit (at least according to the toolbar).

dazzlindonna -
When was the last time you did anything to cause this jump?
Have you added links, content etc..recently?

I think the toolbar is useless at his time. My guess is that updating the toolbar data/servers hase become a lower priority while google migrates to their new process.

Just to clarify - I have made a couple of changes to the site recently (2 days ago), which might explain the jump. I added 4 bolded phrases (essentially using them as headlines to separate sections of content on the page), with each phrase including the keyword phrase I am targeting. I added several pages of content, and added a site map. My guess is that one of 2 things happened:

1. Google finally got around to using some sort of data it had not used before (updated something) which made my rankings soar.

2. Google loved the bolded phrases I added and bumped me up.

I doubt at this point that the added pages or sitemap had anything to do with the rankings increase, but who knows...

<added>I do not have a freshdate on the listing today</added>

Interesting.

In my opinion google is placing a lot more emphasis on fresh content. I think when people are reporting movments in the serps it's not because of anything they did to their own site. What they are seeing are other sites getting a freshbot boost/drop.

In the scientific/engineering community it is usually common to hold all variables at a constant except for one. You then change that one variable and observe the result of the output.

Right now there is total confusion in regards to what is hapening with google. People can't even agree if we are in an update, nevermind whether backlinks have been counted, what filters are in place etc...

Ok I am convinced there was some kind of major move in serps last night. We have about 15 sites that all moved dramatically across the board.

Keywords that were checked yesterday are moved all around.

Anyone else?

Yes. My new site which was launched in late May just moved up about 40 positions for its main keyword phrase from yesterday. I don't think fresh content is playing a role in this. I think Google is figuring out some of the off page factors.

I agree. There was way to much of a move for over 15 sites we watch for it to be whatever is left of freshbot.

Amazing what a ton of incoming links will do for ya! ;)

My website moved up 55+ spots on 2 of my keywords and about 10 spots on my main keyword last night.

Another one of my website moved up 40+ spots on it main keyword.

I was expecting both these websites to move even farther then what they did on the next update for their keywords. I haven't change anything on the pages for a month, I just added backlinks.

I really don't have a clue what is going on with Google right now. I'm dumb founded.
