Word on the street is that there are some strange stuff going on with the old www, www2, www3.

I see new dmoz listings having positive effect on new sites and shuffling serps. A competitor's new dmoz Spanish listing just got in his new indented result. New well optimized sites in my top kw's are jockeying 4-5-6, our older site is still #1. Our other site lost 3 positions after loosing his dmoz listing 2 weeks ago, no other change for this site in the last 3 months.

We watch the data centers daily and see no significant changes.

The backlinks that were lost in April by a competitor are still showing although some new ones have been added to our sites.

Here's hoping that a new update is happening but I don't think so.

I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary at the moment. Do you know something we don't, Brett?

I was definitely expecting to see another update, though. The rolling update thing just hasn't happened, apart from new sites/pages becoming permanent in the index without needed to go through an update.

I still think of backlink changes as the best indicator of an update, unless SERPs changed dramatically in a short amount of time, which so far they haven't.

Something seems to have happenned for my site.

Since Dominic Google has regularly dropped about 10% of my pages at any time (which pages changed quite frequently). Allinurl would show about 10% with URL but no title, no snippet and no cache.

Today for the first allinurl shows them all.

I tried about 5 or so terms and they all seemed to be the same. Also when I do site:domain.com -asdf I get the same number of links. One thing I have noticed is that when I do site:domain.com -asdf I have been going down every day for the past few days. The funny thing is that the number that you can actualy view has stayed the same. I have always wondered why they said I had 104 links but when you go to the end and even when you do the &filter=0 you still only get 67 or so links shown. Another weird thing is that this morning one of my pages had a PR0 on toolbar and fell 2 pages on the serps from yesterday. After about 20 min the PR came back but not the place in the SERPS. I thought that was weird. All my other pages are the same from yesterday on the SERPS. One page even moved up 1 space on another SERP. Things seem to change for me a little every 2 days. I have been chaning my titles every day now that has helped.

Regarding the questions about the number of data centers, I'm guessing that there's at least one that's not well known (new?)...

AOL for five days now has been showing results that are either cached, or from a data center that's not one of the nine that everyone commonly refers to.

I know because for the last five days, we have a site that's #2 on all nine data centers without fluctuation, but #17 on AOL (and oddly, in the AOL SERP's the position has fluctuated).

In the past we've noticed a lag of typically several hours in AOL's updates of Google's SERP's - but only several hours. This time, five days. So AOL is either importing data to their own servers and haven't updated the import in five days, or there's another data center they're pulling from, take your pick. Either way, never seen it before.

>GG needs to announce when they have shifted to continuous update mode.

He did post before between Dominic and Esmeralda that Google was changing to a new system, but that he wouldn't be surprised if there was one more traditional update. That would have been Esmeralda. Thus we should be in a new era. However, what that era is like, and what should be expected, is unknown.

I can report as of today:

A shift in Serps.
New pages added.
Index page back as the first page showing on a search of the name of my organization.
Description taken from the meta description of each page rather than from any text on the page.

Whatever you want to call it,it looks good to me.

I took googleguy's comments to mean that there would be one or more traditional updates after Dominic.

See msg #57 here: [webmasterworld.com...]

where googleguy says: "However, we're still in the transition period for this system, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a traditional update for a little while longer."

And msg #67 here: [webmasterworld.com...]

where googleguy says: "I would expect at least another update of the form where the crawl/index cycle finishes and then data centers are updated in the traditional dance."

Fair point bether2. However, that new system he mentions seems to be in place. I'm assuming Google flipped the switch converting from the old to new system.

I believe GoogleGuy mentioned that some new links were being inserted and scored, but not necessarily showing in the index. If that's true, I don't like it. I think there is reason to believe this may be happening. On the other hand, one of the reasons Google is popular with webmasters is it's addicting to watch. Hopefully, Google will provide someting to entertain us when we have no new email and we've clicked on "recent posts" on webmasterworld 5 times in the last minute and still no new posts. Surely, there will either be a "big update" of backlinks OR even better, a continuous rolling update that changes backlink listings.

For one of my sites my cached page has fallen back a month or so. I was getting fresh dates every two to three days, then late last week the cache updated but the fresh date went away. Now the cache is of a version from mid-June.

Check message msg #51 in this thread. Brett mentions 5 different people started threads on this topic that the mods didn't approve. With 5 different people claiming to see the same thing, this does make one wonder if something really is going on.

Something obviously is going on, it started on -fi and is propagating to other servers. Am I the only one who uses the google dance site?

I started a new site in late May with 15 pages, and added 100 in late June.

I have been getting freshbot on the first two tiers of the site nearly daily until Wednesday. This past week, I was at the point where all my main entry pages were showing up in Google... now it looks like I am back to the initial site pages of late May... and googlebot is nowhere to be seen...

on the other hand... scooter is having some fun indexing like mad ;)

Welcome to Webmasterworld nwctwx! :)

I have seen a similar situation on one of my sites - freshed until recently and now reverting back to an older cache.

At least we know we are not alone.

Me thinks:

There will be one more traditional update, as we still haven't had one since GoogleGuy said there would be one. Google directory hasn't been updated in months.

Then rfgdxm1's theory of a continuous update, much like we are seeing now, will be the new google.

Every page freshed July 23, brilliant results against up to 6 million, so no complaints there, but still showing all old cached pages as well, so according to G have got masses more pages than reality.

Still not stating 700 legit. links but they can all be displayed.

Still only PR1 despite links from 5's.

Happy that all will be sorted sometime.

Funny to see GG in a thread. I bookmarked his profile page and often click it to get to WW but the member profiles don't show recent posts anymore. I guess it confused the natives when posts that were in premoderation was showing, but hopefully it will be back soon.

I am definatly a newbie, so I will apologize in advance in case I say something stupid.

I was doing pretty well in google up until about two weeks ago when my sight droped off of the first page and onto the second. The funny thing about it is that the title it is an old page title. It does not even match the title on the page it has cached. I am also patiently waiting for google to add the dmoz category when it displays my links.

Any thoughts on either two issues.

Thanks

GoogleGuy said
Things look pretty normal to me.

The problem is that over recent months, abnormal has become the new normal.

I would certainly be interested to know why my site ranks more highly on -CW (has done for a couple of weeks) and now -FI is doing the same. My limited understanding of the way Google works is that whilst transient differences between data centers are normal, static differences are not, therefore things are not normal (unless abnormal is the new normal).

Kaled.

Things have moved for certain, on one of the more competitive terms I compete on I have moved 3 spaces up. Results havent moved much, but a little.
