Agreed 95% - however if you are following the Google guidelines you dont expect to be beaten by sites that are not following the guidelines.
To tell the truth - in general I only look at my own position in the SERPS and try to improve rather than looking at how other sites have got their with dubious tatics.
I agree with you that Google has the best algorithm, and also that spam is not as much of a problem as many make out.
From what I've read spam only seems to get mentioned from a webmaster point of view and very rarely from a visitor perspective. You never hear 'I was searching for widget' but the results were no good'. You hear 'I want to do well for the term 'widget' and I'm being beaten by spam so the results must be rubbish'. I'm not criticising Google serps, i'm criticising webmasters ;)
However I think that without some significant algo improvements, spam is more and more of a threat to this situation. And major algo changes = drastic changes in rankings = threads like this one full of complaints about people's sites not ranking as well, disguised as spam reports ;)
I can accept defeat - (but for only one month), after that my clean tactics will change and that is a move on the wrong direction.
I have other quality competition that has dropped as well. I would rather lose out to them. But maybe all of the top people in our industry have been trying to avoid the "dark side" for too long.
I think links are valued much more than Google than Inktomi and Fast. Time to grab some incoming links.
Then we go and check another domain. Regular server it has 9 in the index. This server has 11. (I added a few pages and did a major layout change).
So it seems to me like these are pages that are just ready to be dropped into the regular index, that have been changed/added from the last update.
That's what this place is all about, no!? Not very much hobbiest, joe and jane's here, afaik. Complaining about others who complain doesn't make it better. And i wouldn't suggest others to see spam as the "better seo". That's simply untrue.

So, you're saying that you think the SJ results are going to be consolidated into the current index, and then maybe there won't be a google dance, just a recalculation of PR?

I am not sure. It just looks like these are all the new pages/files that have changed/added and have been crawled and identified by google. I have no idea what they plan to do with them. I would imagine they would go into the index. Not sure if it will be on the fly(which has been discussed a lot around here) or if there will be a dance.
Incidently I just checked my logs and GoogleBot came and took my entire site on the 29th of last month from both 64. and 216. or whatever it is IP's.
Seems like something very odd os happening, perhaps as critter said they could be freshbot results.
SJ looks to me like the index of about 10 days ago.
I think they stuck it on there to play with it and compare results with current index to check algorithm improvements.

I don't think you really understood what I was talking about. I just think that complaining about the quality of the serps is for joe searcher not joe webmaster. I get irritated when webmaster criticise the serps purely because their own site isn't doing very well.
>>Complaining about others who complain doesn't make it better
If you read my post I wasn't doing any complaining. I was hoping to cut short the number of posts that are just spam reports.
>>And i wouldn't suggest others to see spam as the "better seo". That's simply untrue.
I don't recall advising anyone to do this. I advised 'out-SEO ing' competitors who are beating you. How people do this is entirely up to them. My preference is for clean pages.
Don't worry about it :)
Everything will be fine :)
(MrGuy: very funny) :P~

It's my opinion (which is always right...heh) that these are not in any way the update results and that G's having problems in San Jose.
