It seems that a major google update is under way. I just checked www.google.com with the normal set of keywords that I generally use to monitor any changes and found what I believe is a major update. Now its back to original results. Its kinda on and off.
One of my site had a 50% increase in the number of pages crawled.
I hadn't much chance to check out whether the update spells good news or not, so lets keep our fingers crossed.

One can just hope, although this is a hugh speculative factor for me. Given the scope of this update, it falls outside the weekly rolling update, and looks and smells like an old fashioned update which spreads across the network.
May be we can expect BL, PR and other factors to start coming in next week and the algo to be tweaked?
Please help! :)
I have a site on geocities.com, about astronomy. I was just included in google directory at the category
/Top/Science/Astronomy/Amateur/Deep_Sky_Observing/
My page is number 4 in the list. The green bar next to my site adress shows what i think is a page rank 6.
But when i check with google toolbar it shows that my site has a page rank 0... Why do i have a page rank in google directory, but no rank in the searche engine?
Many thanks!
Emil
1. The fewer results returned in total means that the datacentre is lookng at an index with fewer pages in it and as so possibly cannot be classed as up to date OR that the filters are working correctly or are set too high possibly.
2. The more results in total means that a full index is being used.
Is there any general consensus of opinion regarding this?
I strongly suggest that you should register your own unique domain name.
Use something like your name here, plus dot-com or whatever,
but stop being a share-cropper.
NOBODY respects a Geocities site.
If I find myself at a Geocities site, I instantly hit the Back key.
An honest and unique domain can be purchased for surprisingly small sums of money.

malasorte, the Directory updates on a different schedule than the toolbar PR, (which in turn is on a different schedule than the true PR that G uses for the serps).
Did you check your toolbar PR in the past to see what it was? That is, was it PR6 before, or is the site brand new and still hasn't had the toolbar PR update, (they don't happen that often anymore)?
Also, you should edit out the specifics of your site location in your post before a Mod does it for you.
Remember when Googleguy used to show up and give some insights into what was occurring? Whatever happened to him?Take your pick
1. It was more fun for him when he was talking about something one could be proud of. I would be embarrassed to be a representative for their SE now, too. I'd be rich though.
2. Google is now a public company and his roll here has been limited to that of a champion of new products rather than a liaison between the SE and webmasters.
3. We say mean things about Google and it hurts his feelings.
4. Once the word 'sandbox' is mentioned in a thread, no google representative is allowed to comment in that thread.
5. All of the above.
Yes something is up with this. When I checked late last night,
64.233.171.147 was showing even better results for me (and mine were good before this update)than two days ago. Two days ago it was showing where I had been for the last year. Now for certain keywords, I am even higher than I was. What is 64.233.171.147 and is it important? Last night for two hours I was getting the results of 64.233.171.147 consistently whenever I searched from two different computers and then it went back to the negative changes. Also, when I was getting the better results last night my backlinks were double.
BTW I would love if GoogleGuy would let us know what is happening, I would also like to ask him why Google does nothing about forum and blog spam.

I am glad to hear that. But the results are so different than the others, so do you think 64.233.171.147 will be the final results when this is all over or do you think this is just a glitch?
on 64.233.171.147 - Results 1 - 10 of about 3,220,000
on google.com - Results 1 - 10 of about 11,500,000
I do not know nick35. I hate to say that I do not think that 64.233.171.147 will ever go live.
However 64.233.171.147 theoreticaly results are live if you are searching on www.google.com from Texas, Plano - enter trough a proxy an HTTP proxy at 216.63.70.130 on port 80

Agree that if one is half of another, it's not done....
But, what if three different servers are showing slightly different totals - all with total results that are roughly double the amount shown on the 64.233.171.147 server? Is it necessarily so that of those three, the one with the highest number of results is furthest along? Not sure about that.
Question really being, do some results near the end of the process go *down* instead of up? Or do the totals reflect ALL possible results, regardless of penalties, filters, etc. that are being applied?
When the site is where i want it to be there are more results.
