What I think is that I'm seeing a case of premature anticipation.

Okay, I am seeing a really wierd effect whereby i am swapping between several positions on every refresh.

5th with a July 20th cache
6th with a July 20th cache
6th with a July 22nd cache
4th with a June 28th cache
5th with a June 28th cache

The first three are fairly standard fresh update/everflux type thing, but seeing a cached page from a month ago looks like traditional update territory to me.

Also what does "Well shoot howdy bubba" mean in English? I only looked at the thread because Brett started it! ;)

I don't think this is anything major. It looks to me like very minor changes due to a bit of fresh data.

weird...3 looks strange. I went from page 2 to page gone for 1 keyword and then stayed the same for another keyword.

Something is different for sure.

Plus it went from searching 650,000 pages on www1 to 640,000 on 2 and 3 for my keyword.

I first noticed different results on www, 2, and 3 on Thursday last week. I've nothing but wild guesses at this point.

Nothing really dramatic

It has all settled down for me now, looked like a brief glimpse to me.

The most dramatic thing I can see now is that the fresh dates on www-sj.google.com have acquired a comma and are reversed, so now they read 'Jul 23, 2003' rather than '23 Jul 2003'. Maybe that was always the way.

I think we are in update Forever, Marcia. I already posted some time back that thread about I believe that we are now in the era of the "continuous update." OK, it is more in occasional batches, but it was the best I could come up with at the moment. ;) I would expect Google to occasionally update the backlink numbers. However, in this new continuous update era there may not be any dramatic changes when this happens, like with the old dances. Clearly, new data has been added many times since Esmeralda, which has resulted in substantial changes in the SERPs. This ain't the old everflux.

It's crashing mysql server left and right :( My mysql server crash and talked to my server provider and they are saying people are complaining of mysql problem right this moment.

Talked to a friend on a different server provider and he's having mysql problem too and the last thing that went in is of course...googlebot :(

I like the olden days:

1) Once a month updating of backlinks

2) Once a month updating of PR

3) Once a month crawling

4) Once a month caching

5) Once a month serp changes

I remember when I had to walk through five miles of snow barefoot....

It is hard to make scientific measurements and determine what is an update anymore. Maybe it will be like a syndrome - no REAL defitition - but meeting x or so requirements - like fibromyalgia or ADHD.

Which one is scooter again, AV? Anyways, I got lots of scooter, inktomi, even ask jeeves, but a serious ton of googlebot continuous crawling since the weekend still hasn't stopped. Haven't seen most of the pages crawled over the last month actually make it into the index. I'm thinking/hoping that there is a big update coming that will add all these pages.

Heh. Google driving any of you crazy? Curiously enough, not me. At least so far. I have a theory about how things are working now, and nothing about how things have evolved are inconsistent with that theory. Thus to me everything seems normal. Of course, if my theory is flawed I may be surprised by the future.

As for PR being updated, part of my theory is this is now being done either totally on the fly, on at least partially. What the toolbar shows is not what the algo is using. I also believe this is true for backlinks. Just because they aren't showing doesn't mean they aren't being counted and affecting the SERPs. I really can't explain changes I have seen since Esmeralda without this being the case. What I am wondering is whether Google is using estimated PR mid-update, and will factor in traditionally calculated PR periodically, or if it is all dynamic? Those Google Ph.D's may have figured out a way to do it all dynamically.

I tend to agree. I rarely check my backlinks, esp my hobby PR6 site which had over 200 backlinks once and now shows just 12. After Dominic it was somewhere in-between.

When I compared the 9 data centres a day or two ago, they were nearly all in flux but the total counts for Yahoo etc were supposedly the same at www, www2 and www3.

No complaints at all about my SERP rankings. At the moment, almost any random phrase seems to work for me :)
