Define "spammer".
The kw stuff and hidden text "spam" is mostly dealt with by the algo. PR is the gate keeper and cornerstone of the whole system. So, the threat to PR is where the anti-spam efforts have to focus as the "source of all spam". Take care of PR, and everything else takes care of itself.

Go to www2.google.com search <snip search phrase>. OH MY GOD.
Check the cache of #1. Pure spam, now redirects to a new site.
Same with #2
5 is a copy of 4 in the cache, which now has a new front on it.
6 now autforwards to an affiliate link
9 is the same spam (check the cache) now autoforwards to an affilate link.
10 OH MY GOD! "<snip content from page>..." Check the cache vs the page there now!
The purest most horrible spam I have ever seen ever! Check the cache!
In summary, this is by far the worst update ever in history. I don't know what they are doing, but inktomi looks great compared to this, and that is sad!

If that is worst spam you have seen - there is a problem.
EVERY ONE OF THE TOP 10 SITES is about the keyword you mentioned - except for the last one.
Just becuase they are affiliate sites - or have something different in the cache - doesn't make it spam.
Users do not check the cache for spam checking.
Every one of the sites clearly says what it is in the title as well - except for the last one.
I wish that was true. It looks like links beats PR. My site is a solid PR6 and is now being beat by a pr3. A competitor now has 6 affiliate/doorways in the top 15. There is also a pay per click page that I have know Idea who it belongs to and a directory page giving its search results for this keyword phrase. Oh, I can't forget the two ebay redirects.
My site has maintained top 10 for this phrase for the last 2 years. Each month for the last three more junk has crept in. Unless something changes soon this one will be the worst index for retail shopping I have seen.
My-customers/Google-users should not have to click thru the same site 6 times. If these kinds of shopping phrases continue to deteriate customers will do there searching elsewhere and advertising dollars will go down for google.
imho
Fingers crossed, but if this is the real deal, my life is complete (until tomorrow at least ;) ) Thanks to all the WebmasterWorld'ers who have given help, support and the odd p***-taking comment.
Halle-bloopin-lujah. Cy.
Isn't it better to wait until the update is finished before slamming google and the update. I am still seeing changes in pr on some sites, different results on 2 + 3 etc.
One thing I will say though and somebody brought my attention to it in another post. Spam maybe bad but they update their pages a lot. Could this possibly be a reason, that in the new algo, the most updated, and perhaps even frequently updated pages are given slightly more weight than in the past.
I have also noticed some hyphenated keyword domains moving up in ranking. And there is definitley more doorway domain and doorway page action appearing on google. Not good. I own a bunch of very important hyphenated domains and have been sitting on them to see how google is going to treat them before I start branching from my main domain.
But the bottom line for me is going from #12 to #1! PR4 to PR5 and www3 isn't showing half of my new links yet!
And all this while on vacation in CA. Maybe googlebot can feel my vibes better from here!
Hope it all holds,

Im also seeing PR starting to kick in on my daily check today, compared to my 2 earlier checks of the update. Some of our established sites seemed to be downranked to new sites early, but now in searches where www, 2 and 3 are almost the same they have now recovered.
That may explain why people see spam results on ww1 and www2 early.
Seeing PR is an important factor in the quality of Google results If my assumption is correct its another reason to hold off judgement for a few days, and not to build much into 2 and 3 results especially in established and highly competitive areas until it all hits www and settles down.
Thanks to Webmaster World, I've moved into the top ten for my main kw of 'music publishing', and I even passed up Sony. So, you really can get things done if you follow the advice here and work hard. This is my first site, and I've only been doing it since February. By the time I hit the one year mark, it should be doing really well. Thanks again WW!
After you click around your site for a while the googlebar will revert back to PR from www.
Have also notice this effect in google directory when preceeding from www2. or 3 directly, after a while it revert to www. PR values.
This doesn't make it true, just an observation and maybe an explanation why PR jumps around.
However, I would certainly concur with many of the comments this time around. Google has made a change and it has reduced the quality of the index. I don't think it is a massive degradation, but it is there and it is noticable.
I've had a rumage around but can't really get to the bottom of what they have done. Could be various things.
Whatever it is should really be reversed out. Tell the engineers to file it under failed pilot study, or similar.
Yes, problems still remain and there is a horribly spammy site on the frontpage with a major shopping keyword - but nothing is ever perfect.
P.s If we see real changes in the directory the number of pages usualy changes in a lage categorie, right?
