Can we all share our Monthly Earnings + Unique Monthly Visitors to your whole site? That way we can see how big of a site and how much it earns without disclosing more sensitive or private data. Don't forget to post CHANNEL data, not aggregate data!
I propose and I provide my info first:
My biggest site:
$40 in 10 days (new member)
Monthly unique visitors to my site: 40,000 to 50,000
Less than 100 impressions per day.
I believe the key for me is to INCREASE traffic.
I've put my site in DMOZ, which bumped up its PR (within a few days) from 0 to 3. But what practical thing should I do now to increase TRAFFIC?
Got my first check this weekend for over $2000 (march)April I earned over $8000
Dec 2004 8,400
Jan 2005 13,400
Feb 2005 11,000
Mar 2005 10,000
Apr 2005 7,000
I got paid no were near that...I emailed support just now and I'm sure they'll correct my screwed up account. If it is correct then I can finally pay off most of my debt...oh well here's to dreaming. Also I doubt they'll adjust earnings for last year...history is history is most likely what they'll say....or "we fixed your screwed up stats on your account"...suck.
The articles all together get a little over a hundred thousand hits a month, but the bulk of that is just one article that earns me all but a few dollars of my ad revenue. As I've been implementing a site redesign, I've been removing adsense from non-performing pages.
My first month in the program, last september, earned me $3200. I was pretty astonished. But March's check (which hasn't arrived!) will be for $1800. I've been working more at my site, with recent improvement, so April came to $2100. If the trend persists, May will be around $3000.
I am very nervous about the fact that ALL my revenue comes from just one ad unit on just one page. I was more comfortable before CheeseburgerBrown's site went PSA. If that happened to me, I'd be quite screwed, my revenue would disappear instantly.
I know I need to diversify. I've been trying Amazon and Powell's (http://www.powells.com/) affiliate ads for books that are relevant to my articles, but have only sold three books in a couple months. I expect I'll leave the ads there but won't focus on them anymore.
For about a month and a half I've been paying to advertise my least-popular articles. Most of them have great content but are just not well known. The result has been that some pages that got a hundred hits a month now get a thousand.
"What?" you protest, "You're removing adsense from article's that you're paying to advertise?" Quite so: once I realized my ads weren't going to pay off in adsense or affiliate sales, I realized they might well pay off if readers were to LINK them. I recently calculated that the links others have given me have over the years been worth from one hundred to one thousand dollars EACH! If you can advertise in such a way as to build repeat visitors and links, then advertising is much more worthwhile.
My site redesign was greatly improving visitor retention (they'd stay to see the rest of my site instead of just leaving after reading one page), but has been a lot of work so it wasn't until last week that I added a new article for the first time in a year.
Since then I've added two more. I used to write massive, well-researched multipage articles, but could only post a new one every six months. Now I'm writing shorter ones but expect I can post at least once a week. I just added a "What's New" section to my article index, where I'm placing links to both the new content and the redesigned pages as I get them ready. The result of this is that anything new that I publish very quickly reaches 500 to 1000 hits in the first month (based on a few days traffic), even before it shows up in the search engines.
Just this morning I added a meta description to my homepage that is a blurb for my articles. My homepage gets a lot of traffic, but unless you're a potential client, it's hard to see why you should visit within. I also found a tasteful way to make the very first paragraph after my H1 tag to be the exact same blurb.
I'm hoping this will both help to retain those who stumble across my homepage, and make its listing in the search engines more interesting to those who find it in a search. It's too soon to tell if that will be the case but I should know in a day or two if my article index gets more referrals from my homepage.
I have the intention, and feel I have good reason to hope that by the end of the year I can quit my job for adsense. While I am self-employed, the way I earn my living is by no means easy, while writing is something I do for fun and relaxation. I'd be as happy as a pig in s*** if I could write for a living.
I had long considered writing for magazines, but this way I get to keep the rights to my work, and enjoy repeat revenue as long as anyone cares to read what I write.
due content 7 free listings in Yahoo directory
Is there some way to apply for a free listing, or do they just add it themselves when they take notice?

This may or may not work anymore. Several years ago when my main site was still fairly new, I had read somewhere that the Canadian editors didn't have the heavy workload that those here in the US had. Therefore I submitted my website to the Canadian site instead of to the US version. My website got listed quickly for FREE, and is still in the directory.
One bad news is, Google adsense ads are not completely relevant. At present, they ask me to enter url's of specific websites to block. How can i block ads, based
on what they offer and their market segment?
thanks
anyways... I've just recently started my AM business.. have done fairly well on my first month... about 5 digit income... all from affiliate sales.. now I'm ready to start milking my adsense sites.. :) I'm currently in the range of $100-$200/month.. with adsense... mostly on consumer goods website..
I have a quick question..hopefully not running too off topic here... I'm interested in building a new directory style website with adsense on it, I think someone mentioned about their private school directory wanted to know how that's coming along? are you adding reviews or allow your visitors to comment on your website? or is it just plainly directory and some short information about the private school?
