Of course money is important because it can help produce better content, but content is and always will be the most important.
AdSense helping the web to create good content: it's good. But I lately observe some folks who instead of concentrating their efforts on providing better content, are concentrating on optimizing their AdSense banners what leads to situation that AdSense banners are covering majority of their website and content is just designed to incite readers to click on AdSense. This is madness and content is getting worse, not better, due to AdSense then.
For example, did you know that people want to be able to make panties for their dogs in heat in order to prevent breeding? Try to find out how to do this online, it's not easy. Post the info, along with links that dog lovers would enjoy, and of course, include ads for the lazy ones... links to buy the panties on Ebay($20 per new registration) and Google ads to purchase other products for dogs. Many people spend a lot of money on their pets!
This is how you get word of mouth advertising, before you know it, everyone in the kennel club will know about your link!
This is how I make $2000-$3500 a month online(not the pet panties, lol, but something along the same method of thinking). My site contains about 375 static html pages.
Why you all people are so materialistic?
Because daddy needs a new Porsche.
AdSense more as an independent web statistics technique
AdSense statistics have nothing to do with your actual web stats, you know that, right?
AdSense helping the web to create good content
AdSense is REWARDING people that create good content and paying well for those that did it years ago.
However, it's helping the web create a lot of crap sites built for AdSense that have no value at all.
concentrating on optimizing their AdSense banners
It's called marketing.
I started my site in '97 just to test a new product I was building, silicon valley programmer you know :)
Then the site evolved into a full blown hobby for a couple of years.
Then it suddenly started making money, sweaty fists full of cash.
Yes, I tweak ads on the site all the time and adjust my marketing.
WHY?
Already told you:
Because daddy needs a new Porsche.
speaking of which - the base href META tag
I was looking at my pages through a googlebot sim that I mentioned in my last post - It has a field called content-base in the header info - picking up my base href there - that very well could be something there - but again I was 302 hijacked too.
I mean that was a good thing - picking up on my base href tag.
"some links dont work" thats bad. Why would google send visitors to a site where links don't work?
I noticed something strange too in those bot sims.
<a href="blablabla"> works while <a href= "blablabla"> does not. Like I said modern browsers are a lot more forgiving than bots.
AdSense statistics have nothing to do with your actual web stats, you know that, right?
"Nothing" is too strong word. I think they are related: although AdSense statistics can't show how many users visit website, they can show how many times ads have been displayed. So not that bad.
New Porsche? You want to buy Porsche just from AdSense revenues?
they can show how many times ads have been displayed
Best I can tell you this number has next nothing to do with the total times those pages are displayed.
I have 2 ad units, a LB and Sky, yet come up with ODD numbers of ad units displayed all the time. I have some very accurate page stats and you're right, best it can do is tell me how many times the ads display.
Follow the math here:
I have 45,000 page views daily, if not more. AdSense records about 38,000 impressions daily with 2 ad units per page, meaning ads are only really displaying on about 19,000 of my 45,0000 daily page impressions. If I knew how/when/why AdSense didn't display on the rest of those 25,000 page views I'd have that Porsche already.
New Porsche? You want to buy Porsche just from AdSense revenues?
Why not?
It's already paying the mortgage and all the bills, what else would I do with this pile of sweaty AdSense cash?
OK, I'm more likely to get a Cadillac Escalade, but the Porsche is a better mid-life crisis car.
<snip>
Why? Set up to pool useful information on the product since the MS sources were very poor.
How often updated?: Content updates about twice a month.
How promoted? Linked to by users of the newsgroup, since the site is FAQ based. Then google picked it up after about 6 months. Visitors grew from 2000 visits the first month in December 2001 to about 50,000 (350,000 hits, no idea of page impressions)
Finally, the $$$ Averages about $1000 a month, ranges between $750 and $1,600
What's it cost to run? About 4-5 hours of my time a month and hosting on hostmysite.com that's about $200 a year.
The crucial point here is this site is driven by a desire to share knowledge, so the money is a pure bonus, which makes it all the sweeter. I invest half of it and spend the rest every month on guilt-free splurges on anything me or the missus wants. Right now, we're saving it up for a big holiday traveling around the US later in the year.
Right. If we were all that direct this forum would get REALLY interesting. Any questions?
My advice to someone wanting to make money off Adsense is:
* Publish about something you know and are genuinely interested in. That'll motivate you to constantly update and improve the site.
* If you're site is good enough, people will link to it, which will draw Google, which will draw everyone else.
*Make it content based. Either write the content or link to content elsewhere but add to the link with a comment or insight, just linking is a bit pointless.
*Quality not quantity.
*Use CSS not gifs/jpegs to create your design, this'll make it easier to index by spiders.
*Get yourself linked to a lot to increase ranking. Make sure you site has a clear specific theme or subject to create accurate results in google and draw visitors.
*Make the site about something people want to visit! Either something there's massive demand for: travel, humor, gambling, porn. Or a very specific niche, doggie diapers... I believe there's a successful site that sends someone you hate dog poo. So they've turned poo into money! It's all about giving people what they want.
That's a loooong post, sorry, hope it was useful.

I have a similar discrepancy and I just changed my PDA behavior so that I can track PDA views via a graphic file or a call to the collapsing code file.
Guys, can we all stop being so cryptic and vague?
Yawn...we're on the 18th page of this thread stephencummins, which page did you start on, #18?
I suggest you start from page 1 since there is a huge amount of useful information that has been posted!
Business confidentialities for many only allows generic comments to be made. I don't have a problem telling you how I'm fairing but I do draw the line at possibly shooting myself in the foot, let someone copy my site, change things around a bit and then launch under their own brand and possibly ruin years of my exclusive work.
Do I have to spell that out for you?
