Forum Moderators: Robert Charlton & goodroi
Mid January I remember wondering where the hell google had got to - my pages in the cache weren't refreshed in weeks. End of last week / weekend the cache of some pages updated daily.
That seems to have settled again.
Anyone else experience this?
* Adwords against company name and variants.
* We've bought variants of our domain name. We normally avoid this to avoid duplicate content penalties but that isn't important at this point.
We still have good sales, but they're from people typing in our company name, so I want to make sure we catch as many strays as possible.
* More PPC adverts outside of Google. Its not to penalise Google, but if they search our name they get our competitors and not us, and I don't want to drive them to our competitors.
* Focus on offline sales. We've always sold much better offline than online so thats where our ad spend should be.
over the past couple of months i have worked very hard on our company website, writing good content adding pages improving the file size of pages etc.
over the weekend our search results went through the roof, we have never had better.
but from reading this forum, im starting to think that its not going to last long.
are my google results due to hard work or an update from G?
dazed, confused and worried that this is a short term thing.
To,
Larry & Sergey,
Hope this reaches you. I am a well-wisher of Google & was a fan....uptil now.
my website is online since 1999. for last 5 years, we have been on first page first site for our primary keywords.
But, now with this recent algo change of urs, we are nowhere.
This is simply NOT LOGICAL! I categorically state that, we have not spammed or used any technique which is called as black-hat.
In your race in rolling out new products, you have forgotten what your core competancy & responsibility is.
If this is the way you are gonna give importance to the quality of your algo, then I forsee Google going the Alta Vista way. I know many people have already said this before, but I just HAD to say this.
regards,
Paul.
Today though one of our sites has disappeared entirely from the search rankings, although it is still indexed. PR4, two years old, no dodgy SEO whatsoever. Yesterday and previously it ranked number one (not difficult as you'll soon see!).
Okay, so other sites have suffered the same, but this site is a little different as it is dedicated to a litttle used slang word - with that word being the domain name too. If you search Google for this word less than 600 results are returned so you can see how little it is used. No other site is dedicated to this word - they just mention it.
I've checked every result of the 600 and this site isn't there. And yet it shows up if you search for www.WIDGET.com.
For me this tells me that no matter how much head scratching I do I won't find the answers to why Google does this or does that. Or why some sites rank well and others don't.
There is no big picture, just countless little ones.
1)
Following the tread there seems a pattern that domains matching a keyword seem have to be lost / cracked down.
2)
Also some middle old sites seem to have been penalized or sandboxed.
Maybe an Adwords extension program for older sites :-)
G$ seems to give the madman as usual.
i just had a call from my son ,he told me that in his college they have change the default search engine from google to MSN.co.uk.does that tell you something?
Considering how unbelievably bad the results on msn.co.uk are, it tells me something about the person who is charge of IT at that college.
MSN.com I could understand, have you seen the results from .co.uk?
At least they are relevent to the search terms unlike Google which currently brings back a pile of directory sites and ZERO content sites full of links, Oh and a bias towards the sites they first started to spider.
You could say that the college Head knows exactly what hes doing!
Maybe after this current update google will improve, currently i see little sign of it!
Brixton. whatever, 10%,25% even if it were up to 90% of the web that is offered by the .co.uk version compared to the .com why would that be better?
Remember a huge number of sites that are NOT hosted in the UK just do not appear in msn.co.uk.
Anyway I thought the thread for MSN localization was [webmasterworld.com...]
GoogleGuy: if I say that I don't plan on using Adwords, will my site get restored to its former glory? Thanks
I work on six or seven sites.
Only one is experiencing MIA. By MIA, I mean that you search for x when your domain is x.com and x is a unique phrase, and in the results you come up way low, whereas you used to come up #1. Beyond that, you are buried in the SERPs on phrases you used to do well on. You were Top Ten and not you are #89, for example. But not just for a few phrases; you appear to have dropped 50 or so spots for everything. It's as if a penalty is being applied to you, yet you cannot think of anything you've done to earn MIA status.
Here are some attributes of my MIA site:
- Around 5,000 pages in total
- ASP based
- Uses ID= tag in ASP string
- Has some redirects from old .htm pages to new .asp pags
- Cascading javascript menus
- mini-site map for navigation in the footer
- changed rightnav.asp (global change for the site) just when Allegra started updating
- Used to get about 2,000 Google visitors per day, now get about 25 a day.
- I found a duplicate site at www.excite.co.jp
- I have a Commission Junction affiliate ad in the left nav on every page.
- Adsense on every page (Adsense $ dropped considerably post Allegra)
- Google shows 289 backlinks, Yahoo shows 1270, AlltheWeb shows 1140.
- Never paid for a backlink. All backlinks are legit and 99% are unsolicited.
- Add new content frequently (maybe three or four articles per week)
- Found some sites out there with identical title, description, and keyword tags for the main page.
- Have a glossary of terms on the site
The thing is I don't have a clue why this site would be treated so poorly by this update. Of the things I list above, the only thing that is unique to this site versus my other six or so is that I updated my rightnav.asp just as Allegra was starting. My only theory is that somehow Google saw that all the pages were different, just as it was starting the index and said "I can't treat this site the way I was planning on treating it, because everything has changed. I need to wait, re-spider it, and then add it."
Any ideas?
It's a Google problem in my opinion. Sites of all kinds have been caught in this. Let's hope they are working on it, but I have lost hope. I know it's bad to lose hope, but G has lost a lot of respect in my eyes. First they let the 302 redirect issue unsolved for months as we got creamed and now this.
Hmmm...I'm back at some DCs. Still hoping ;)
