Is the team at Google on Holiday until the New Year? Still waiting for the dance.

Happy New Year from Chicagoland!

I found this in one of my logs just now.. seems strange if an update is around the corner...

"Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)"
64.68.82.7 - - [31/Dec/2002:11:18:26 -0500] "GET /cgi-bin/links/rate.cgi?ID=198 HTTP/1.0" 200 2312 "-" "Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)"
64.68.82.69 - - [31/Dec/2002:11:21:28 -0500] "GET /cgi-bin/links/rate.cgi?ID=157 HTTP/1.0" 200 2302 "-" "Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)"
64.68.82.38 - - [31/Dec/2002:11:28:04 -0500] "GET /cgi-bin/links/rate.cgi?ID=182 HTTP/1.0" 200 2316 "-" "Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)"

206.52.251.207 - - [31/Dec/2002:11:31:09 -0500] "GET /links.css

I wonder what this is all about?

Happy New Year everybody!

Something does indeed appear to be happening, look at the Google News top page. The fresh tags were back for just a few minutes, with fresh results from Dec. 30.

I just have to say that the anticipation is amazing. It really is seductive to wait and see if a months worth of optimization will bear any fruit.

Kind of like the opposite of waiting to bomb the arabs,

632,000 backlinks for Yahoo here. There is NO update yet.

"UTC would be the logical standard to use on an international medium like the Internet."

Spoken like a non-Californian.

Six more hours of 2002 in Los Altos Hills and Mountain View and Palo Alto and the City of Googleplex.

California is like a bowl of granola. What isn't fruits and nuts is flakes. ;) My guess is there isn't going to be a December update this year, even if measured by CA time.

If that's true, rfgdxm1, then why is GG on tonight?

I think if they don't update, we should have some kind of webmaster Bastille day and storm the Googleplex. Any takers? ;)

Happy New Year folks! Hehe we're still in here on new year's eve - we must need medication :-)

Storming the plex sounds good, lemme know when so I can book a flight :-)

I wager the update starts when the apple in new york hits midnight.

Happy New Year everyone!

I have moved up three places for a keyphrase. Still on page 8 though so all my optimisation was worth toffee. I am really getting tired of making changes month after month and getting nowhere.

Relax. The update has NOT started yet.

troi21,

I think this is due to the fact that G seems to have included fresh results crawled on Dec. 30, not because of the update, so the change you see is just part of the "everflux". SERPS did indeed change tonight for the first time in a few days, but there is no update yet.

Totally true, freejung.

My site is back with fresh tags and all the title changes I made since the last update. It's a very obscure site so I've managed to get #1 on virtually every KW combo I can think of.

Do you think maybe they'll never index again, just freshbot and touch up the PR once a month? Permanent everflux perhaps.

My site had 113 hits from Google today - the 31st between 0220 and 2300 with just 9 of these being the image bot. Fresh tags are back - I don't think there's gonna be an update!

Looks like there are no more updates to look forward too........

My nails are down to the quick...I am beginning to feel so deprived!

Looks like the fresh bot has been visiting tonight
IP 64.68...

I was hoping that when I came home tonight, the dance would be well on it's way.

Disappointed.

OK, now wait a second, guys, let's not get too excited. Little too much alcohol in the mix tonight, eh? If they "touch up" page rank once a month, that's still an update. I've been getting crawled by freshbot almost every day, but I still can't wait for the update to get a new PR. I think there will be an update, in the sense that PR has to change some time. Who knows when it will be though...

I don't think so, Ann. The update is still needed for links and to do the massive PR re-calc. And what about updating all those poor sites that Google doesn't think are "important" enough to get freshboted?

I am more concerned about what this might mean with regards to possible major changes. As I recall, last time there was a long delay, the update came with a major shift in the algo.

Of course, maybe someone threw a party hat over the "big red button", and now everybody is too drunk to find it! ;)

It's within minutes of midnight, New Year's Eve in Google's time zone, and the opportunity for an update in December is gone. Toast. Nada. Zilch. :(

Its 2003 at the google Plex so I guess this thread now has an answer. there will be no december update.

Now watch:

It's after midnight at the Googleplex, there is no December update, so everybody goes home and goes to bed. Once there is silence, GG says...

"OK, guys, _now_ push the button!" ;)

Seriously, I think the strongest point made here is that they're probably tweaking the algo, that's why it's taking so long. Look for some big changes, coming soon to a Google near you.

Another theory why it's taking longer than normal: They have a goal of how many pages they want to claim they have indexed so they can have the bragging rights of most pages indexed.

Maybe..?

But the amount of pages crawled was determined back in the beginning of the month.

Thanks a lot Google Guy! You ruined my New year's Update Theme Party!
Picture dozens of PO'd webmasters all in Google t-shirts and hats (ok, some of the hats were Google mousepads held on by elastic bands) drinking Google Merlot (vintage December, 2002) and all turning ugly on me as the horrible realization dawned that there was to be no update.
I hope you're happy!

To heck with the Google theme party. Yer all invited to my Oscar Party on March 23rd. It will be weird. And it will happen on schedule.
