Is the team at Google on Holiday until the New Year? Still waiting for the dance.

I'd like to take 6:15 UTC, Dec 31 as the time the yahoo links start changing.

The ODP structure has changed radically in some important areas. Do they have to build th new structure into the google directory by hand? That could take a bit of time.

I say it starts at 22:00 GMT on 31 December.

I'm an ODP editor, I can see no reason why they'd have to do any manual work. The ODP data is just an RDF (XML) dump so it wouldn't make a difference how much restructuring has taken place, it'll just go in.

Does anyone know if the Dance includes updating the Directory?

I don't think it does Made_In_Sheffield... when I was first indexed by Google, after getting in DMOZ, it took until the next indexing, (or there-abouts, it didn't coincide), to get in the Google Directory. I'm very new to all this; I might be wrong.

no that's what I thought too, I don't believe the Dance has anything to do with the Directory update.

I find fluctuations in the number of pages found for some keywords.

I hope to win a t-shirt or something.

There are routine changes in SERPS all the time. The best way to detect the update is by changes in the number of backlinks to yahoo (link:www.yahoo.com). It's still at 632k on all 3 servers.

Is everyone seeing the total absence of fresh tags like I am? I've noticed that this seems to happen when the update is near. I've also seen this happen at times other than update though. However, since the update is very much due, it looks to me like that is the reason for no dresh tags.

rfgdxm1,

Someone said the same thing a few days ago, but the fresh tags came back.

The chicken entrails (the only reliable guide) say that the dance hasn't yet started.

I wonder if they're doing something with the data thrown up by Google Answers - some kind of experiment? Maybe they're experimenting with factoring in some kind of boost for pages which have been identified by human researchers in response to questions asked on the beta service? Just something swimming around in my head.

Tea leaves, moon phases or wine dregs.

Right now I'm staring at wine dregs and they ain't telling me a dang thing. Time to sleep, perchance to ... and no concern until the morrow.

The cache of CNN is dated 12/26. I don't believe there is anything newer in Google. If my memory serves me right, I believe there are fewer Fresh Updates when the monthly update is near.

Let's see. The last updates were on Halloween and Thanksgiving. Could it be New Years Day? If so, are there any notable holidays in late January? Or will they skip January and update on Valentine's day? ;)

I think I remember who announced the november update! :) Is it to be the last in 2002, dvduval?

I just noticed a certain search I had left earlier in the day on one of my machines here... I refreshed it, and the results dropped by 80,000 sites.

Could we be dancing a slow waltz?

I for one have given up the pretense of believing the dance will occur before the new year rolls into the USA

This of course emans it's very likely to go ahead and begin right after I punch send on this note. And that lads and lasses is why I stay away from horse tracks & OTB parlors.

Night all, unless of course it's morning or afternoon where ya be indulging in yer fav beverage.

GG said holiday, the question then: "is new year's eve a holiday?" Or do we have to wait 24 more hours.

GG, I say any day where it is socially acceptable to get drunk and kiss other people's spouses qualifies as a holiday, so push the button in three hours...

I hope to win a t-shirt or something.

Okay, secured a prize. Winner gets a Google white T-shirt (size: L). Shirt features Google logo on the chest and its slogan "I'm Feeling Lucky" on the back. All times are UTC unless noted otherwise. Interested in judging Brett and Laz [webmasterworld.com]?

Hey! How come my Google T-Shirt only has the logo on the front and nothing on the back?

Well, it is getting worn out anyway.

My guess is Jan 1st 3:00 utc, although I am seeing some thing that tell me the orchestra is already tuned up and just waiting for the baton to be waved.
