I'm in the same boat as Rhadamanthus.. I just put up a site about 6 weeks ago and while I'm getting listed thanks to fresh-bot, I've go a PR of 0 until the next update. I've got a few really good inbound links though now, and can't wait to see if my PR goes up.

Go go gadget Google!

taxpod - Oh, I'll be checking up on the google updates, but nothing like the way I'm feeling right now. My site is up for the long haul - I'm not worried about being the biggest site next month, in six months, or even one or two years. I'm a very patient man. Changes in my ranking from month to month aren't a driving force in my marketing strategy. But getting into Google with semi-decent results in the first place IS crucial. If I do as well as I expect to this time around, then it's confirmation that my general approach is a good one, and all I need to do is continue (and perhaps tweak a little). If my expectations are totally of base, then maybe it's time to rethink things from the ground up.

I won't be going through this in six months because I'll already have a pretty solid idea of what's working for me and what's not by then. Besides which, my site is so all over the map (in terms of content) that I just won't have the time to optimize for more than a handful of the most important key phrases, and within six months I expect to be doing very well for those. I'll have more pressing things to worry about than Google updates.

From what I've seen many people here (mostly the newbies - the old guard seem to know better) make the basic mistake of focusing on short term results from SEO rather than long term strategy. Google could totally change its algorithm for the next update, completely invalidating any SEO work I've done. But if I've put together a high quality web site and built a decent user base, chances are people will find it no matter what Google does.

But I have to get some users there in the first place to make it happen, which is why I'm anxious now. :)

I was just curious if anyone else has noticed any changes in the number of pages they have on google. Last month I had around 10,000. I just did a search on www3 to see how many I had and it came up with 29,000. I assume they have started the update, but I might be wrong. I searched a few minutes later and it showed 10,000 again.

Anyone else notice any changes?

Hmmmmm... GG hasn't been around in a little while. I'm willing to bet if we look back in the history of his posting pattern, we will see it's somewhat dead the week before the update and begins to pick up the day before the update and spikes right around dance time, and slowly trickles off again.

So going by that theory, maybe it's not going to be for a little while longer. I get the feeling he knows around when it will happpen (within 24 hrs) once things are set in motion. Then he comes on here and watches us all and gives us his play by play and holds our hands if we've been kicked out of the database or are plagued by a certain spammer :)

So not today at 1am, I'm thinking more around the 5th or 6th unfortunately.

Anyone care to chart GG's frequency of posts as a function of days before/after past google updates? Maybe we can use it to predict future updates :)

I do see a difference when I check the following in www3 and www:
allinurl: mysite.com

I have about 20k pages, and now in www3 it's a few hundred less. Not sure if this means anything at all.

That is caused by everflux. It is link:mysite.com that matters.

I just checked my keywords in the www2 and www3 and showing different results from www.google.com.

Does this mean that the update / google dance is happening?

It seems it happens four times a month. In fact I joined just to say that people should just use Bretts tool before posting. I was so excited and now its just, damn...

I used a tool that shows the results for all three...and they are definately different. Are you suggesting that it is showing incorrect results? Just curious...and what is Brett's tool?

Yet another case of premature egooglation.

Sarcasm received, I asked a question….I didn’t ask to be ridiculed…very unusual behavior in this forum.

I would not post that I found results to be different unless I had checked them a few times. I used a tool that searches all three at one time, maybe it is not the official tool, but it is one that was suggested to me to use in this forum.

I apologize if it seems that I am too eager as it has been suggested to post…but that was not my intention. It was to “ask” if others could verify what I, myself had seen.

Kindness and consideration is always welcome and appreciated, and why I love these forums….I am here to learn and participate.

The tool is ok. But keep it on yahoo. Just as the tool is.

Are you checking yahoo backlinks across the www's? Checking your serps is not the same thing.

Jon_King,
No...I did only check my own keywords and didn't know that there was a difference and that is why I "asked" the question.
So...checking one's own keywords is not an indication?
Once again...just a question...although many seem to find a good time out of making a person feel like a real idiot here for asking.

And what is egoolation?

Hey...take a look at that first backlink from yahoo.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/google-friends/

That's a PR9, but from that page's backlinks it doesn't seem to have the links to make it there.

Is google artificially wanking up their own announcements board? ;)

OK, I'm sure they're not but it doesn't add for me. I'd believe it if it was a toolbar guess from groups.yahoo.com, but since it has its own backlinks...I dunno.

Don't take to heart anything here, believe me most here are very kind and helpful. We are simply toying around and enjoying a bit of word play.

Yes, the accepted indicator around here is unequal Yahoo backlinks for www, www2 and www3. If you click the link I posted earlier in this thread, you will see a triple split window with each of the WWW's backlink count for Yahoo. When these are equal, no dance. Unequal, the dance is on.

The serps across the WWW's have variations in my experience, I don't know what exactly causes it, but it seems to be associated with freshbot updates.

lindavh,

I think you might be talking about a different order of search results (which can often happen across the www, ww2 etc without an update) while other people are talking about the number of backlinks to Yahoo, which only changes with a genuine update. Actually, if the number of backlinks to your own site changes that is also a reliable indicator of an update.

Everyone makes a bad call every now and then on the update. Reason why you get flamed when you do is that quite a few people are desperate for the update to happen and if their hopes get shattered, well its a big letdown.

I almost called it the other night and I made a worse mistake than you...I mispelled my keywords and lemme tell you that makes you see a whole new set of search results in a hurry!

Googlebot is still out crawling so I don't think they'll be an update yet (it crawled my site today.)

Thanks.

Backlinks in flux.

My backlinks have changed on www3... same number of them, but ordered differently. Never seen that before.
