This thread is for discussing all of the bugs and issues with the new WebmasterWorld beta that's RWD (responsive web design) for mobile using Twitter Bootstrap.
See this thread for more details: [webmasterworld.com...]

Note that only WebmasterWorld registered members are allowed into the beta site.
It's currently not viewable if you're not logged in or by search engines.

So login! :)

The beta site location is here: [webmasterworld.com...]

Your current user name and password are all you need, it's the same data, just a different version of WebmasterWorld's layout.

Within the Forum page (where all the threads of a particular forum are listed), as well as the Forums Index page, the image that indicates a new post (http://www.webmasterworld.com/WebmasterWorldbeta/images/new.png) has a white background which looks a little out of place against the gray background of the table it's in. I'd suggest making the white part of that image transparent instead.

Also, the alignment of the "threads pinned to top," "new unread threads," "flagged threads," and "my recent threads" images seem to be centered in the table header but left aligned in the table body. If those could be centered in the table body as well, I think it would look more consistent.

Still not seeing anything in the pagination links at the bottom of each page below the quick reply box..the ( on this page ) three* "previous, current, next" boxes are empty, but on mouseover I can see where they go..and clicking them works..on the recent threads page I can see the page numbers, next etc..but on mouseover there is nothing..they are not functional..so I can't go to any thread which is not on page one..new post red dots are still not resetting if I refresh the recent posts page..

Linux mint maya ..FF28

Also noticed that now when one posts , one is not taken back to the page one was on, but is instead taken back to page one of the thread..:(( for a brief time a couple of days ago, one got taken back to the page one was posting into..please can you put that behaviour back.. after post is accepted refresh to current page, not to 1st page in thread ..

When using the page number navigation at the bottom or the "Next" button, get error

The requested URL /WebmasterWorldbeta/activev5.htm was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

get error

Darn, beat me to it.

The missing link to the 404 page is pretty funny, though. I suppose it's trying to find
http://www.webmasterworld.com/wm wbeta/404.htm

or, uh, whatever the page is actually called. Are we really using Apache 2.0? How retro. (Analogies Present Themselves.)

Still missing padding in Preview. All elements, not just the post window itself.

I assume the top-arrow problem has not yet been fixed. Didn't check, but the <a name> anchor is still in the same place.

or the "Next" button

Huh. On closer examination, I only get the error on things like the Active Posts list. "Next Page" works fine within threads.

Link that doesn't work:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/wm wbeta/activev5.htm?page=1&sortbj=Date-Last-Post&ashow=25&sortdir=rvs

Link that does work:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/wm wbeta/webmasterworld/4725077-2-30.htm

So they're clearly entirely different formats. I suspect this one will sort itself out in time.

be nice if we could have pagination links at the top of each thread.
you've got them at the bottom of the page, but removed them from the top. i'm sure they used to be there before, but maybe my head is playing tricks. i don't remember having to scroll down to the bottom of the page to jump to the last page

Still not seeing anything in the pagination links at the bottom of each page below the quick reply box

There should be links there, they're supposed to be up top as well so when I fix that I'll double check the bottom too as we just revised the quick reply the other day and possibly lost it in the shuffle. Thanks for pointing it out as I haven't been on any big threads lately, will ad that to my test cases

The link back to Classic at the top gives a 404.

Works for me in multiple browsers on a couple of test accounts

Can you give me the exact page URL where you clicked it as I suspect it's a forum page or something where we made some slight URI changes which will cause a 404 is the page URI doesn't match up, or perhaps I didn't pass something, it will give a 404. Also, if you click classic after doing a POST it's possible it might do something strange as I've yet to try that, most likely what's going on. Try the link from a fresh thread page load and it should be OK.

It has a lot of funky issues to deal with in the Classic/Beta redirects, but POST isn't handle at all, only the URI paramaters

For the umpteenth time :)

Why so much excess white space in the comment boxes?

[or am I the only one seeing an extra 10 or 12 blank lines when a comment only has two - four lines?]

PS: Scrolling past empty white space has no health benefit, that I know of anyhow. :)

Huh? What are you talking about? You must be imagining things.

Just kidding!

It seems to be a near-universal feature of Forums software that, by default, useful links are only at the bottom; you have to tweak the code to put things at the top where users want them. I've noticed it in php/bb in particular.

Meanwhile, the down-arrow link works even when the up-arrow doesn't. So that will get you right to the bottom.

Not a glitch, as such.....
The thread titles are not as visible (prominent), as they were before. Perhaps because everything is in the same font/size/etc....
Since the thread title and description areas are now different sizes, it looks a little untidy, to my eye/mind......
The link underline, for me, just adds to the confusion.....

Maybe, if the thread title was made bold, that would sort all of those things out...... Differentiate between threads and make the list more 'scannable'.

Just a thought.....

The link to "classic" works for me (using the hamburger )..the pagination on recent posts page I can see the numbers and "next" but it still has no working links behind the numbers..

The pagination on long threads still has no numbers , but the "invisible" links in the blank boxes work..

I'm wondering if it isn't about allowing "cloudflare"..gong to test ..

Ok tested..allowing "cloudflare" makes no difference..to either of the above..

Linux Mint Maya ..FF28
( no script and adblock ) with WebmasterWorld and Googleapis allowed..

Btw..I don't see loads of whitespace in comments..

Agree with tbear about the thread titles..maybe a pale blue background ( like the OP post colour ) would help to show off the titles ..

I don't see loads of whitespace

Well, you're on a weird OS or browser aren't you? I checked in recent Safari and Firefox, and I know you're not using-- ahem!-- MSIE. All behave as if each post had a {min-height} equivalent to about eight lines. Like, f'rinstance
:: detour to pore over CSS ::
Dang. I didn't really think it would be that obvious.
.post-fix {min-height:210px;}
...
.white {background:#ffffff;padding:5px 10px;word-wrap: break-word;border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;min-height:210px;}
...
.reported .white {min-height:240px;}
...
@media (max-width: 1319px) {
.post-fix, .white {min-height:250px;}
.reported .post-fix, .reported .white {min-height:280px;}
}

Once you're in the @media rules there are a bunch more, but all in that general size range. And yes, post-fix is the name of the class that contains each post.

Oops.

Works for me in multiple browsers on a couple of test accounts

Can you give me the exact page URL where you clicked it

I clicked the link to the Beta in the opening post, then the recent posts link at the top of the Beta homepage.

On the Beta recent posts page I clicked Classic and got a 404.

I just tried again and it gave a 404 again.

Asked earlier... why the new browser tabs when I click on anything? (Note: Noscript, no Googleapis)

I CAN get back to things, can post, can, sorta, find things.

But even if I DO allow googleapis I get the same result.

Over time on siie that number of new tabs will crash the browser if one does not keep killing them off.

One layout bug I've also noticed on mobiles... the pagination links at the bottom of long threads are hidden by the subscription box. It's as if the subscription box has been moved up to overlap them (because you can just about see a few pixels at the top of the links). That means that you can't jump to another page of the thread anymore because the links have gone

Thanks for all the input. We tested and tested and, most of you will know, change one thing and it changes another, and/or, has an impact on a different browser/platform.

Really pleased to hear of the differences people are seeing. Keep it coming.

Thanks

MOSTLY I like it.

The lack of pagination buttons at the top is becoming increasingly annoying.

Not a high priority, but the layout that displays while a new post or reply is being saved is really clumsy and looks awful. My sense of order feels assaulted.

[imgur.com...]

Also the bullets in this post:

[webmasterworld.com...]

post #4743155

look kinda funky.

Having to change to Classic in order to see beyond the 25 newest posts is getting old. And where'd the New Post icons go on the Newest Posts page? Currently I'm having to remember the last time I was here, and stop checking at that point. As I speak, the icon has rematerialized, but I'm ### if I can figure out what made it show up. Crystal ball says that before I got redirected, something happened to make the site think I'd already seen the Forums, so nothing is new.

And, wait, why are there two entirely different New Post markers? One style is the "flat" one
<span class="new2"></span>
i.e.
/images/new-24.png
in the single-subforum list (the one with four columns for pushpins and flags and, uh, whatever the ### the others are for); the "3D" style
<img src="/theme/default/gfx/new.png" border="0" alt="new post marker">
shows up if you go back one step.

(What did happen with that Classic link? First it didn't work, and now it does. I'm confused.)

What did happen with that Classic link?

Nothing yet (even incrediBILL has to sleep sometime).

From Beta /recent-posts.htm the Classic link is to:

webmasterworld.com/classic.cgi?classic=yes&url=/***beta/recent-posts.htm

[Asterisks represent a Web-Master-World acronym which apparently cannot be posted]

Much depends on what classic.cgi actually does, but if classic=yes then I would expect it to strip out the Beta part of the URL and change "recent-posts.htm" to "active.htm".

The actual URL my browser is sent to (webmasterworld.com/recent-posts.htm) is incorrect so I get a 404 page saying "What we have here is a failure to communicate with the page".

Commendably honest, and it is only a Beta version.

I get a similar problem when I click Classic from Beta /open-posts.htm or Beta /control-panel.htm - the URLs I am directed to (e.g. webmasterworld.com/open-posts.htm) do not exist, and the usual URL would have included "activev5.cgi" or "stickymailv5.cgi" followed by a query string.

Same results in Safari and Firefox.

I only have noticed one problem with WebmasterWorldbeta. It would be much appreciated if you can provide a print option that only prints the thread and not the sidebars or footer. I just printed a thread and got 4 pages of forum links in one column which wasted a lot of paper. Firefox doesn't provide a print preview like Safari.

Always wondered if we'd have FB like shares, tags, likes, reviews, images and of course metrics.

Otherwise, lookin' pretty good from MA via Firefox / Win7.

I'll still hang here no matter what - maybe it is better without all the social media features.

Thank you Lucy.... I'll bear that in mind (no pun intended, LOL).

I'm not always getting the 'new reply' red button, either.....
The button helps to separate threads in the list, for me.
It is very difficult trying to make quick sense of the thread list, as is..... so, I'll be going back to Classic view, for a while....

I just realised, what is making the difference, regarding ease of reading the listings, is that the Classic list has regular sized row height size. The new design's rows are irregular.....
