I really thought that we would have started to see the beginning of "The Google Dance" by now.

Anyone have any thoughts on when it might start?

Would you mind sharing those thoughts?

Thanks Mike.

Having not watched the dance closely in the past, I understand from this forum that it is a four day process.

So if it were to be completed by months end, it should start by saterday, correct?

I really don't think Google much concerns itself with the end-date of the Google Dance. And four days of dancing is on the short side of what actually happens. It will begin when it begins, I would guess around the 28th.

There's no reason to assume the update has to be completed by the end of the month -- or even that there will be an update starting this month.

As MeditationMan says, if you check that the March update this year occurred on April 6. However, if Google stick to the usual pattern, the update should occur by the end of the month.

Last week I wrote in another thread that this coming weekend would be my personal guess. Seems that my chances of being right are steadily improving. Anybody seen any glitches today?

There are quite a few questions that come up with the anticipation of the Google update.

One of the best discussions that answers most of the questions associated with the update:

  • Google Update FAQ [webmasterworld.com]

Knowing that the update is near and that the monthly crawl for January's update will also begin soon (if it hasn't already), it's usually a good time to make sure that you've completed all of the updates to your site that you've been putting off due to the holidays.

Hope everyone has a great New Year.

This one should be included in the Webamster World Google Knowledgebase V2 [webmasterworld.com].

    >>As MeditationMan says, if you check that the March update this year occurred on April 6.

Judging by the frenzy that updates cause, I would have to say that there were at least a few webmaster who were admitted to insanity wards that month.......

(envisioning a webmaster rocking back and forth in the fetal position mumbling......
    "it's april...march....update...full moon....googlebot...update...serps.....
    gotta be #1....crawling...spiders everywhere.....")

    :)

I think it will be tonight or Friday night, since it takes a few days and their crew will probably want to be out celebrating for New Years next week.

I like having only one thread while we're waiting, so we can all suffer together. :)

I think it will happen when the bear, rabbit, penguin, and racooon fully open there presents in the Google doodle!

Right now they're still taking there time, and admiring the wrapping, hehe. ;)

But when the presents gets fully opened, maybe thats symbolic for us webmasters getting a christmas present from Google: The Google update. :)

Actually Marcia, I doubt holidays are relevant in this issue. If they were, then last months update wouldn't have happened on Thanksgiving day. For those reading outside the US, the biggest holidays over here where people want to be with family are Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving. For many companies, they also take off the Friday after Thanksgiving to give people a 4 day holiday weekend. That Google did an update on Thanksgiving suggests to me that the update doesn't take much human intervention. Makes sense. They push the big button, and then the computers do all the work. The time to tweak the algo would be *before* the update, during it probably would be impossible.

    >But when the presents gets fully opened, maybe thats symbolic for us webmasters getting a christmas present from Google: The Google update.

Remember, the net satisfaction of webmasters with Google is a constant. Some sites will be at the top and have happy webmasters, while other sites are buried and the webmasters think Google sucks. Thus, for many the update will just mean a lump of coal in their stocking. ;)

If the Christmas logo changes, then you know someone was in the Googleplex over the holidays to change it. And if someone is there to change the logo, then they can also push the red button that starts the update.

On a serious note, there is a lot of flux and "strange stuff" happening on all three www that lead me to think something is happening or something is coming soon.

Just very odd, quirky stuff that goes beyond everflux. Several threads and messages here confirm that i am not seeing UF-SERPS. Unidentified Flying SERPS.

So when is Brett going to tell us to stop worrying about the update (it will happen when it happens) and go try to answer some of the questions that haven't been replied to as yet.

(Yes, I have one waiting from this morning for any of you .htaccess redirect experts out there.)

    Very strong, active everflux,

www2 results appearing in Yahoo then disappearing.

People here seeing # backlinks change, then go back to what they were.

I am not sure, but I think the cigarette smoking man is behind it all.

hmmm... that racoon looks much more like a beaver to me; brown, buck-teeth, wide flat tail?

The update last year was on December 27th, which is why I think it'll be some time between the holidays. But it wouldn't surprise me too much if they'd do it New Years Eve to ring in the new year. A lot of people go home for Christmas out of town, but not so much New Years. Google does have a flair for drama, and that would be kind of dramatic, to hit the button 11:59 PM on December 31st.

    >what strange stuff is happening?

Here's one example of an Unidentified Flying SERP. Yesterday, for about half an hour, on one SERP my site jumped from #6 to #2 on google.fr. None of the pages listed in the top 10 were new ones, so this can't be explained by everflux. Everflux is new pages being added pushing other pages lower. This was a rearranging of the order of different pages.
