I cannot see what all the fuse is about with PR
No - I assume that this public display of PR has already been incorporated into the SERPS
I put up new page on 18 Sept (now PR4) and another linked from the same internal page on 25 Sept (got no PR) -- so assume that the PR is what G calculated between those 2 dates.

My thought process is that PR updates early in the month lead to SERP changes later in the month. Following the pattern of the last few months, we should see SERP changes around the 22 - 24th of October. I believe that is when these PR updates will matter.

from what I gather it's the other way around. This pr is simply an update of pr, that was reflected in the serps some time ago.
At least that's the way we *used* to follow this...
I also thought it was well known that at the 'plex PR calculations happen frequently (or something like that). At some point they decide to give us a bone and update the bar...
No, you have it backwards, unless G is changing something. In the past, changes in the SERPS' have been happening about 2-3 weeks prior to changes in the PR that you see. This may have changed, though, since G SERPS have changed quite a bit over the past 3 months and the toolbar PR hasn't changed until today. And the SERPS do indeed to be undergoing some changes today as well, although nothing drastic.

This question has been asked a few times now. Would anyone care to enlighten us poor souls who cannot see this so we can sleep easy?
How relevant is the PR of backlinks versus the number of backlinks? My point is that many top results do not have high page rank.

I am forgetting myself here, the idea of measuring anything today with Google seems to be a guess at best.
I am certain that PR is not accurate.
The backlinks are certainly not accurate (I have a site that shows 10 backlinks, 5 are DMOZ clones, no mention of Dmoz or the Google Directory as backlinks.
Thats about the best i can do, but its more specific than what we have already.

Then, I want to express what everyone else is thinking:
Thank God! I thought this day would never come. Now I know longer have to be ashamed of my PR Zero which is a 6 now.
PR may or may not matter much these days, but it sure beats having a white bar.
One VERY significant change seems to have occurred - an index page that was PR 4 is now PR 0. There is no reason to believe a penalty has been applied but there is one factor about this index page that is UNIQUE in my site : it has absolutely no inbound links from other sites (I haven't attempted to get any since the page is for software still in beta).
(Firefox PR tool and future pagerank tool agree on this.)
Does anyone else see similar behaviour? If yes, it would suggest that backlinks from other sites are required for toolbar PR to be counted as non-zero.

They never do. This PR would have already been incorporated internally
Interior pages are not carrying as much weight as they did for the last 3 months. Pages that were PR5 are now PR4.
Backlinks for sites as low as PR1 - Yahoo directory - as well as PR2's & 3's are now listed in our backlinks.
Many of our backlinks that used to be PR4 or PR5 are now PR2's & 3's.
This change (negative) in the numbers does not appear to have had any immediate impact on our rankings.
I have found it strange that since the last PR update we have had a page that is "noindex" with a PR1 (now back to PR0). It was almost like Google over-ranked interior pages by a factor of 1. That seems to have now been adjusted.
For the love of god when will this end.. :-)
Until now my internal pages had PR0 and ranked like sh*t compared to my homepage. Most of them now have PR5 but they still rank badly. I doubt the new PR has taken any effect on the serps yet.
Artile pages are one link off homepage and X_Y indicates depth. Navigation is structured so X links to (several) Y's and each Y links to parent X. (IE navigation should show decreasing PR with depth. None of the pages are deep linked elsewhere to my knowledge).

article 6_9_X -> pr3
Anyone care to explain this one? (I was waiting for pr on the 6_X pages pages but hoped for 5 or so...they are pr1 across the board and have ~ 4mos under their belt).
