Is Google now just doing a continuous, rolling update?

I believe so.

Given what is still going on now with the datacenters, I am going to propose the theory that Google has shifted from monthly updates to minor updates every day or 2. This is why Esmeralda seems to have no end. Esmeralda was the beginning of a brave new era of the constant update. Of course I might be wrong and just end up with egg all over my face after this post. ;)

I also notice it seems that Google has 2 banks of datacenters. Only one of the 2 does the partial update. Next partial update, the other bank of datacenters is used. Looks to me like -ex, -in, and -zu are involved this time. And, possibly -va. However, it could be that all of these are being rerouted all to one physical datacenter. Looking at traceroutes this may be the case.

Nervous_SEO:
"Whats that supposed to mean?

99% of webmasters can't compete on adwords when huge conglomerates are buying all the kywords to get market share not caring whether it is actually profitable or not!"

IMHO if you want AdWords to work it will. There are specific keywords and regional keywords that would apply. Your statement that 99% of webmasters can't compete is just malarky. We are a small business in a very competitive field and have programs in AdWords, Over, FindWhat and Sprinks that bring us a constant stream of both traffic and CUSTOMERS.

I sometimes get the impression that some webmasters EXPECT to be given the first page for every keyword they THINK they deserve. Google does not OWE anyone a certain placement. They can make up any sort of index they want - just go look at the SE competiton.

Is it possible that we are getting frustrated with Google because we have been able to manipulate them to get top listings? If they are now a step ahead of us we must adjust however if we are in business and want to keep eating it may mean doing business the old way and PAYING for some advertising and promotion.

If you are making money on your service or product start a business plan that won't be subject to the ups and downs of FREE advertising.

i wasn't stating that older sites get better ranking as a 'fact'. however, i have some older sites, that have had NO work done on them, that are maintaining their top 10's for VERY competitive kw's with no new backlinks and no new content.

i have other sites that are newer, and have imo better optimization and good backlinks that have been rising and dipping since dominic.

the older sites haven't moved much...as nowhere NEARLY as much as the new ones.

perhaps it's not that old sites do better, but maybe google has a batch of newer data that just isn't stable?

i dunno.

it's all speculation; and anyone who says that they know exactly what works and what doesn't, doesn't.

My thoughts are:

This is the longest time (in resent times: 2.5+ months now) that I have seen results settle on all 9 servers for more than 48 hours (for my KW, maybe not yours).

It is also the first time in 6 weeks that I have not seen a visit from GoogleBot in over 36 hours. (I have dozens of un-related sites, with links from ALL over, on different servers...).

I think one of two things is about to happen:

An update will happen this 4th of July weekend, or,

the longest update ever has just happened over the past 2.5 months, and I will see you all back here in August. :)

GG, care to comment?

I do not mean to post twice in a row...

But as my night goes dark, I am thinking I am onto something.

Still no visit from GoogleBot.

No changes in the SERP's.

Is this it for the month?

GG, really, let me know. My wife needs to see me sometime this year. I will not go to bed until i know things have settled down, so I have not seen her since March...

Which is maybe not such a bad thing, but certainly no worse than the SERP's...

I know how to optimize for any search term for Google right now.

Wait for it, competitive (really) search term and the winner (alright, going between page 1 and 3) is;

This service is unavailable
This website is unavailable

That is the search result copied directly from Google. It is also confirmed in their cache. link: shows two low pr sites with some links to the domain (keyword1keyword2net.com). Has plenty of keywords stuffed in the keywords and description though. But nothing else in the body except......

This website is unavailable

Hope that addresses any theories about "on site content" :-)

Nice one!

Anon27...

no visits from the bot here since the 30th

I was getting hit multiple times a day everyday and now nothing.

maybe the bot will take breaks between the constant updates and the SERPs will settle and then when we see the bot back the SERPs will start moving all over the place again
