Update is on :)
When everything comes together, I believe the SERPs will look quite different than they do now (on www2,www3, -sj, etc).
During previous updates, the results I saw on www2 were pretty much the same as the final results I would see on www.
But my understanding is that this update is an exception. So I think we should buckle our seat belts and get ready for a new kind of ride.

This is not an update.
This is moving the -sj trash, errr "results", onto all the servers.
The backlinks are from two months ago.
Google Guy has already said there will be a process to moving in these junky results, adding correct backlinks (the genuine update, maybe soon probably days away), updating pagerank, altering the search results.
This stuff now is two-headed monster junk that mixes old data with new stuff (without a hint of spam filtering or pagerank).
One reason webmaster happiness is not constant now is that the spammy sites moving up have long ago given up watching the serps for those pages and aren't aware that they have moved up. That why we are only hearing from those that have moved down.
On a more serious note here's what I've noticed so far:
- 50% drop in backlinks
- up a bit in some SERPS down a bit in others
- No change in PR
Just a regualar update for me except for one weird thing I noticed for a particular keyword we are number 1 and number 3, but both these results are for the same page. The only difference is one is for mydomain.com and the other is for mydomain.com.au. I have never seen this before, Google has always seemed to understand that we use the .com (in all links) and the .com.au is just there as a fall back (in case someone tries to guess a url). To make it even weirder the .com.au page has NO backlinks.
This makes me think that the filters that GG has been mentioning have not been applied yet. Duplicate content and spam and whatever else gets culled is still in there for the moment.
I hope this isn't final.
So true. I bet there will be many happy spammers who had long ago given up hope.
Having read the entire update thread this month, I have to hand it to Googleguy. Man, you have seriously thick skin which any rhino would envy!
I recently said, "Thanks for providing a truly great search engine" ... ;) which you may or may not recall, but I want to add, thanks for taking so much time to help us all. Your participation at WebmasterWorld is unbelievable! Where the heck are the rest of your peers?
Googleguy takes a lickin' but keeps on tickin' and I for one appreciate your candor.
If people would choose to read between the lines, they would learn a lot from your posts! ;) You're often criptic ... but not so much so that the average person couldn't figure out what you are really getting at. :)
Many thanks for all your efforts GG! :)

Can anyone else confirm that the backlinks that are showing in the new index are from February?
They are most definitely from Feb from here. A new site I activated the DNS on on 2-12-03 shows the one backlink I used to get it crawled. It has 50+ now. In addition, that one backlink is not my DMOZ nor Yahoo dir listing. The link showing is a tired old PR3 long eliminated.
I'm sitting tight; if DMOZ & Yahoo aren't showing, it's definitely not right yet.
