I think we had a Penguin or some EMD update. I have an informational site that's been around for a while - 1 word EMD - and it's nowhere to be found.

If there is such a thing as a reference site the only way to beat the reference site would be to destroy the reference site. I don't see much Amazon though. More one site then Ebay. It looks more like who is following the template. Are the layouts for the top ranking sites the same?

Actually when I study these pages it appears to be very little about content. In fact some have less than 25 words of content. It appears more about the number of links to other pages in the site.

awarn, we know that Google has categories for many niches. No doubt that every catergory is traded different.

It looks more like who is following the template.

yes, that seems a Mayor factor, too. The top 3 sites have all the same navigation style.
