When people asked Cutts about the next Penguin Update he thought: You don’t want the next Penguin update, the engineers have been working hard.

For Penguin:- The updates are going the be jarring and julting for a while.

Webmasters who want to get as much visibility as possible should look at the spectrum of value you’re adding.

Thanks for the report. I hope the engineers have been working VERY hard. In the past they may have demoted content that was ranking merely artificially, but then they let the door open for a lot of junk to float to the top.

I'm all for limiting the ability to rank well through merely technical aspects rather than offering content of true value - but don't follow that by ranking sites of even lower value than what was demoted. It's been a spammer/scraper playground down on some of the long tail terms

Cutts noted Penguin is still in an early stage, whereas Panda is now monthly and they understand it very well.

This is what we were guessing, they don´t know what panda realy does. Seems to me the reason for the daily shifts we see, when they "fine" tune this algo.

You don't need to worry about duplicate content on your own site unless it's on massive scale. If you repeat 2-3 paragraphs on every page. Google may not penalize but it may not count in terms of value added.

This is the most best statement Cutts made.

Cutts said it’s hard to know who published what first. Over time, Google can detect when one site seems to be publishing original content, while another site seems to be publishing duplicate content.

Therefore one has to assume that nothing has ever been date stamped by Google?

As far as i'm aware 99% of webmasters hit by penquin have still not recovered. Some of the lucky one's managed to escape after the May refresh.

Google have yet to push out another data refesh. The SEO world is eagerly awaiting to see if their websites return.

I don't think it's trying to "track down and kill 65% of all SEOs" I have my issues with Google, but I really don't think they're trying to kill SEOs. Matt even said yesterday he misspoke when he made some previous statement that was interpreted that way.

But I'm sure they are going to go after some SEO *practices*, because we all know some are more manipulative than others. And it sounds like maybe this next time they may be doing it with more of a cannon than with a laser. And it also almost sounds like they're not *expecting* to get it right (hence the warning about a lot of jumping around)

Wow, it is amazing how statements can be taken the wrong way and twisted up. I was there yesterday and heard Matt talk about the timing of upcoming updates. He didn't make it sound ominous at all.

Matt said that the panda updates are now on a more regular schedule, perhaps monthly, as we are used to them. The penguin updates are not on a normal schedule so to speak, so when they do hit we will know it. I do not recall him implying that new updates being ominous, he just did not say it that way.

This was NOT a warning at all, just a statement on the timing of updates. It was more like, "panda updates are tweaks" and penguin updates are ...updates.

Hey Barry, I wasn't saying that people needed to overly stress out about the next Penguin update, but I'm happy to give more details. I was giving context on the fact that lots of people were asking me when the next Penguin update would happen, as if they expected Penguin updates to happen on a monthly basis and as if Penguin would only involve data refreshes.

If you remember, in the early days of Panda, it took several months for us to iterate on the algorithm, and the Panda impact tended to be somewhat larger (e.g. the April 2011 update incorporated new signals like sites that users block). Later on, the Panda updates had less impact over time as we stabilized the signals/algorithm and Panda moved closer to near-monthly updates.
Likewise, we're still in the early stages of Penguin where the engineers are incorporating new signals and iterating to improve the algorithm. Because of that, expect that the next few Penguin updates will take longer, incorporate additional signals, and as a result will have more noticeable impact. It's not the case that people should just expect data refreshes for Penguin quite yet.

I wasn't there, but i'd guess Cutts was being slightly hyperbolic with the "you don't want a Penguin update" statement. After all, the update has to benefit some while it hurts others. I wonder if he just meant it's unlikely anyone will see a 100% recovery, the way things are going to shake out.

This is interesting, because I'm hearing a lot of chatter from friends who aren't webmasters about how bad Google results have been the past couple of months. I don't think Penguin's quite the way Google wants it yet.

I'm looking forward to a Penguin update, because I want to understand what it is Google's trying to achieve. Whether or not I recover my traffic, I might be able to see what I need to do going forward, and that would be a help.

Sounds like neverending cycle of updates to broken machine learning algos. They will never work for long tail queries, which is were Google has biggest problems now.

Matt Cutts has become the Allen Greenspan/Ben Bernanke of SEO. Every SINGLE word the guy says gets analyzed to startling detail.

Not to say that I don't do the same thing BTW

Actually Google engineers hate SEO's. I've spoken to a few that said as much, off the record of course. That being said and to go along with Tedsters post the other day and all the worry over the next update...

Here's what I've been doing for over a year now that seems to work well and reiterates what has been said and hinted around.

1. Focus on conversion and user experience. Not a far stretch to think the PPC quality score algo has been implemented on the organic side and the CTR, bounce rate, time on site, etc.. play a role here. If any of you have done PPC, you know what I'm talking about. Hence, focus on the user and the experience. Improve conversion, lower bounce rates...

2. Link building - build brand links in droves. Don't worry so much about exact match anchor text (unless your profile is choked full of them, then you need to worry), build the brand, deep link where you can, the rest will follow.

3. Content and on-page - basic SEO 101 applies here and still works (just don't over do it), content needs to be more interesting and the page should contain what the user's intended it to be about. Not sure here? Check all the sites that rank in the top 10 for a hint on the "intent". What do they do that you don't? What's on their page that you don't have? If you have all of the above, see #1 and focus on improving that, then work on #2. Still not there? Then you over did the on-page or on-site and probably have an OOP.

There you go, hope this helps some of you. Do these things and you don't have to worry about the updates as much.
