Wait a minute. You guys can't seriously be speaking about an update when "the update" is on a test datacenter?

How about getting a mod to rename the thread to "Discussion of the new Google Testbed?"

The testbed/sandbox is very interesting and there's a lot to discuss, but as far as I can tell it's not the one sending traffic.

It's a new thing that Google has chosen to share with us (as well as with competitors), and that's nice. We don't even know for sure if it's here to stay. I wouldn't think of it as an ordinary DC. More like a place for the engineers to test stuff out in large scale, but still in a controlled environment. As Steveb said (#28), it's not even certain that the ranking scores are the right ones. And may I add, why should they be? If the focus of the current tests isn't ranking, why do that part "100%" if "half-baked" will do?

The thing with tests is that some fail and others pass. So, some of it may spread to other DC's and the rest of the Google ecosystem, eventually. Other parts may not.

Or, to spell it out: Be careful that you don't confuse a single prototype of a tree with the forest ;)

(FWIW, YMMV, AFAIK, MY2C)

Claus - re-check the default Google.com...

There results are the same as the test DC.

I'm stoked. Now waiting for the holidays to get over to see if it sticks.

putting this DC live would be a nasty move. it is not better than present SERPs at all.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The 'test' DC looks like it is without any filters and contains some seriously old sites.

Quit worrying about it!

It's still a test. The fact that it sometimes is on google.com doesn't mean much, other than it isn't purely a testbed that the general public won't see at all. It is being shown the public now, but clearly it isn't anything worthy of too much comment, both because of what Matt said, and because at this point it is just shifted results, not a fix of flaws plauging the core index.

This particular time is probably the time of year with the least number of search requests. Christmas and all that

Yeah, they seem to especially like testing things during slower periods as MC has noted previously (summer being another more extended slow time).

But this ongoing reveal of their testing is interesting and less seasonally dependant since as clause says, I'm not sure they always let these into the rotation, except enough to get the data they need..

Sometimes, I think what we see are certain filters being tested either by being pushed to limits, or being turned off altogether. I think they sometimes learn as much by seeing what happens when filters are turned off, as when they are dialed to extremes. Some of the test DC's we see seem like SERP's they might distribute; others, no way.

Well I hope everyone is enjoying the over eating and over drinking season so far ;)

I guess the things that we should look out for in the test dc is better handling of canonicals and 301s etc.

For me I definetly have less Homepage Canonical problems.... but as others have posted and via sticky mail conversations not everyone is seeing this.

I guess/hope with time more of you see this improvement.

Still no rank for the pages though :(.

Eating and gaining weight..Yes. Over drinking..no ;-)

Then you have something to wish for yourself, tigger and other fellow members in your situations to come true during Feb. 2006.

You may wish also to start again posting your popular posts:

I see that this test datacenter correctly interprets Unicode and UTF-8 characters. Awesome. Whatever else they may keep from this test, I hope they keep that.

I'm seeing what seems to be jumps back in time to 6 months ago. Not sure what's going on. My personal site occasionally goes from its new pr6 back to the old pr5 and my company site from pr5 to pr0.

To me it doesn't look like an update but maybe they are just working on something.... anyone else seen this? It really looks like a snapshot of the past more than an update.

At least I'm hoping I'm not really PR0. :¦

.... ps its been a while since i was in the game, and the 7 exclusion filter doesn't seem to work for me in a search to show a website's position without any filters.... how do you show SERPS without filters nowadays? thanks :)

Ok, i just took a quick glance at that DC and on the words I take care of its full of Spam. Not worried about it though as its mine , unbelievably from sites i played with when i was a grasshopper at this game.. Dont see it sticking.

I also noticed a site thats meta refreshed rank along side its target.

Even though i do well in this index i hope it doesnt stick, or certainly that they only take some of the more positive things from it.

hi
I was just stunned to see a result as I was doing a search to send a few good cards to my friends. I searched for 'new year ecards" at 64.233.179.104.
The page displayed this:

"Results 1 - 4 of about 24,200,000 for new year ecards"

and only 4 pages were displayed, it seems that this DC has already blown off.

I can see new results at
[64.233.183.99...]
[64.233.183.104...]

In fact my site seems to return slowly. First time since Jagger I can see my homepage first when doing site:www.mysite.xy.

Does anyone see new results on these DCs too - or is it just my site returning after three months of dupe content penalty?
