Yahoo.com Using Inktomi

Goodbye Google...Hello Inktomi?

I just did a search on Yahoo! and got my results returned by Inktomi instead of Google. I did a few more and most of the searches are returning pure Inktomi results, but without clustering. Their is also no cached link.

I checked with a few of my freinds and it seems this is not the same for everyone as yet. Maybe this is the start of the big switch?

I am in the UK but using www.yahoo.com

Where I am in PA if you do a search for something irrelevant like purple bears online I get the same results in Yahoo and MSN. Both list the same domains in the top 10

msn.com/results.aspx?q=purple+bears+online&FORM=SMCRT

search.yahoo.com/search?p=purple+bears+online&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-tab-web-t&n=20&fl=0&x=wrt

so the only way is by comparing results between MSN & Y?

if you compare google to yahoo and then msn to yahoo you will get your answer.

I am really confused? I just did a search on my computer from my house in Yahoo and I got Inktomi results. I have a friend who lives a mile away and when he searches Yahoo he gets Google results? We can`t figure out what is going on?

When I had the pure Ink results for most searches I didn't get the 'Cached' links. Now that I'm back to Yahoogle, I do see the cache links again.

Also, no 'take the tour' link now I'm seeing Yahoogle again.

Dudes,

I really think that it is unlikely that yahoo are using such quality Geolocation software/service that a mile will make a difference to whether you receive google or yahoo results. PC settings possibly (anyone checked the source of their search page to see if they are using javascript to grab details?), IP range maybe, random (?) or more likely search pharse. People are mentioning searches with states/countries returning inktomi results. And (at least from my location) travel/states/country searches are returning inktomi results...

followup:

all my results appear to be inktomi. Yahoo does alter the title ans description of pages if they are in the directory to the directory listing. I'm comparing results with google.com, hotbot.com and msn.com (also with alltheweb.com and altavista.com just incase...) for these: london traffic; porsche; small rocks.

all these match with inktomi. what does everyone else get for these searches?

Using afterburner's purple bears example, I get an almost exact match on google and yahoo serps. Only sig
difference I saw is that G does the indented second listing and Y doesn't bother with that.

> random

That's how it looks snookie. Stupidly, I didn't record the search.yahoo.com IP while it was giving me Inktomi.

> all my results appear to be inktomi.

For me, 'Search engine' was wildly different from both Pure Inktomi and Google.

Thanks for your post about yahoo/ink results snookie, I was starting to think I was going crazy here in PA.

I am still getting inktomi results in yahoo here but after looking in my log files for several domains I can see that the rest of the world is not seeing inktomi in yahoo? I have some good positions in yahoo/ink but there are no records of traffic from yahoo in my log files? Very confusing.

Here's the answer to the question about the geographical search results variance:

Yahoo's Inktomi search readies for launch
By Stefanie Olsen, CNET News.com

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Yahoo is expanding tests of search technology from its recent Inktomi acquisition in preparation for a global launch, company representatives said Thursday.

Inktomi trials are under way in Australia, Brazil and the United States. The tests make up roughly 2 percent of the search volume in those areas, spokeswoman Diana Lee said.

I just started seeing Inktomi results today in Yahoo.
I'm still no.1 for most of my keywords so I guess it's OK

Yeah, Yahoo's all ink.

Our Ink listings are all over the map. Time for more SEO.

Yahoo never used Inktomi results.

Do you have anything to back that up?

Still Ink for me - this is the 4th day in a row that my computer is pure INK.

I am beginning to think that this more than a test, and instead a staged roll-out.

It is really nice to get this inside look ~if you are curious you can replicated what I am seeing on search.positiontech.com or hotbot.

When you are doing all these tests are you logged into yahoo?

First, try requests whilst not logged in. Then login and try again.

bobothecat

I too continue to see INK results. As with Chicago, for the past 4 days.

When doing these searches, I am not 'logged-in' to Yahoo (actually didn't know there was a log-in ; guess it shows I'm not a Yahoo user other than for checking SERPS ).

Seeing all kinds of redirect-east.inktomi URLS associated with the listings.

Yahoo never used Inktomi results.

Uh... yeah they did. I saw my Inktomi tracking URL in Y!, so it's safe to say that Yahoo was/is using Inktomi results.
