I know that it's early but one of my sites just had about 40 pages indexed. Has this happened to anyone else?

I've noticed that search capabilities have been down if not non-existant in DMOZ/ODP this past week........I'm just speculating but maybe Google is really busy with crawling the ODP. Could it be we will see more ODP related search results in this next algorythm? Again, just conjecture and speculation. Would anyone else care to speculate? Mmmmmmmmmm....verrrry interesting.

There is no need to guess if the dance is here. Just read Giacomo's last post and you will get a definite answer.

All right! Helpmebe1, that is a most excellent idea. You bring the JD and I'll bring Cokes, cups, chips and salsa. Let's go listen to the surf and gulls and to heck with search engines for a while. To the beach!

hey, i thought i closed this bad boy down;)..Oh well, I tried...When you have [webmasterworld.com...] as your home page and have watched the number of posts in this particular thread go from 2 to 192, you start to go crazy, thinking the update must have started due to the number of posts going up everytime I look..I have just changed my home page and am on my way to see my head doc...

ikbenhet1, patience is a virtue they say ;)

Start near the top of this thread.....it's been said that the results in google...be it www www2 or www3 change...they change.

An update is when the link count
link:www.yahoo.com is different between www and the others.

<you have to do a "link:" search, not a regular search, to check if the dance has started.
example: link:www.yahoo.com
I am seeing identical results on www, www2 and www3; ergo, the dance has not begun>

why do you have to do a link search? Why can't you tell from a regular search? Are backward links only updated during the main monthly update?

Maybe we are into a new world of rolling, staggered updates.

Just after labor day this month, the ranking of my site started alternating between top 10 and somewhere way down in oblivion. I have noticed over the last two months that Google has 2 or more indexes that searches are run against. These alternate throughout the day and throughout the week. Throughout the month in August I watched my site fluctuate much more than just a position or two up or down. The strange thing about it was the consistent pattern of the fluctuation throughout the month (vs. random changes if it was just a few new sites being added and dropped).

Maybe this has been a test for a new update model. That new model could be 2 (or even 3) staggered update cycles running simultaneously, yet starting at different times of the month. This would results inan effect of an index that appears to be updated every 2-3 weeks (vs. 4-5 weeks). All this would take is a few million dollars more of computer resources (maybe even less).

Maybe this is already happening. I suspect it is because of the 2 indices that are being alternated right now, one of them has less sites in it than the other (maybe they only spent a few thousand on a set of new computers instead of a few million as a test). And this is the one that began alternating in just after labor day (Sept 6).

I am serious about this multiple index thing. I could show it to you if you were working next to me in my office.

you got it, CuriousWeb: search results change all the time, while back links change only during the monthly update when PageRank is recalculated.

curious web, im no PR/G expert but....

They can't just update mid-way through the month without spidering their intended entire index...as they need PR as part of their weighting.

If they just updated halfway through then the PR would not be accurately calculated...and it would be the sites that were "first to be spidered" (or more accurately...the authority and bulk of links that G found in the smaller time span) that would rank higher.

A bit of a guess....as I'm not sure myself.

For all people who don't know if the dance has started, repeat after me:

search results change all the time, while back links change only during the monthly update when PageRank is recalculated.

search results change all the time, while back links change only during the monthly update when PageRank is recalculated.

search results change all the time, while back links change only during the monthly update when PageRank is recalculated.
