why do you have to do a link search? Why can't you tell from a regular search? Are backward links only updated during the main monthly update?
Just after labor day this month, the ranking of my site started alternating between top 10 and somewhere way down in oblivion. I have noticed over the last two months that Google has 2 or more indexes that searches are run against. These alternate throughout the day and throughout the week. Throughout the month in August I watched my site fluctuate much more than just a position or two up or down. The strange thing about it was the consistent pattern of the fluctuation throughout the month (vs. random changes if it was just a few new sites being added and dropped).
Maybe this has been a test for a new update model. That new model could be 2 (or even 3) staggered update cycles running simultaneously, yet starting at different times of the month. This would results inan effect of an index that appears to be updated every 2-3 weeks (vs. 4-5 weeks). All this would take is a few million dollars more of computer resources (maybe even less).
Maybe this is already happening. I suspect it is because of the 2 indices that are being alternated right now, one of them has less sites in it than the other (maybe they only spent a few thousand on a set of new computers instead of a few million as a test). And this is the one that began alternating in just after labor day (Sept 6).
I am serious about this multiple index thing. I could show it to you if you were working next to me in my office.

They can't just update mid-way through the month without spidering their intended entire index...as they need PR as part of their weighting.
If they just updated halfway through then the PR would not be accurately calculated...and it would be the sites that were "first to be spidered" (or more accurately...the authority and bulk of links that G found in the smaller time span) that would rank higher.
A bit of a guess....as I'm not sure myself.

search results change all the time, while back links change only during the monthly update when PageRank is recalculated.
