AOL = Google/Adwords. ODP
MSN = Overture, L$, Ink
MSN... read and weep.
Google search engine, today announced a multi-year agreement that will make Google's popular search technology and targeted paid listings available on America Online brands.Under the agreement, Google's search technology will begin powering the search areas of AOL, CompuServe, AOL.COM and Netscape this summer.
Sounds like the whole package to me!
Congrats Google!
This is great. I hate to see the confluence of search power in just one hand, but if it has to be anyone, thank goodness it's Google.
...got your Google IPO [webmasterworld.com] fund ready?
Anyone know if they will supply adult listings too or only non adult listings?
Going even further, even if they were to use the regular listings database, we dont know whether will be using the whole shebang or a "part" of it - similar to say the way Inktomi partners use their listings but may even more selective.
Still not sure whether they are using Adwords, Adword Select or both. According to Danny Sullivan in another thread only US users will be able to see the Adword listings, or people from other countries if Adword advertisers elect to have their ads displayed in targeted countries. So I cant check this out myself wwithout going through the anonymizer stuff.
We would be really happy to be in AOL as Google treats us well, but I have a suspicion about things that are too good to be true!...
Apart from that, whatever happens its a great strategic win for Google, and a bit of a blow to Overture, and maybe even LS and the smaller dedicated PPC's. If they do include the full index it sure means that AOL uses would have much less reason to leave the AOL portal to do search, keeping AOL users in their paddock a bit more.
By contrast, MSN's search offering would then look pretty poor by comparison.
Not that it will worry MSN.
An MSN spokesman (sorry spokeswoman) is on record when responding to accusations they are serving up highly commercially-driven SERPS that "...they are giving the customer what they want...".
Hmmm... [caution-self serving comment] if they need market research to prove that, our company will be happy to run some objective surveys.[/self serving comment]

AOL's more than 34 million members and tens of millions of visitors to America Online's Web-based properties, both domestically and internationally.
...
Through Google's advanced search technology, tens of millions of users of America Online's brands will have access to Google's wide index of billions of documents.
Shares of Overture are slumping $9.45, or 28 percent, to $24.74 in pre-open...
More here [marketwatch.com].
Instead of people being worried, I think they should be happy that a search engine that actually has a free submission, spiders regularly, and has relevant results is on top.
I agree that in some aspects Google is getting too much of the market share, but look at the alternatives: Would you rather have AV with half of the market?
And, if that relationship should end, I wonder if referrals from AOL would outweigh the loss of referrals from "Yahoogle"?
