Hi,

Please could someone answer a question for me. Just before the update started my traffic doubled, presumably as a result of the new SERPS. However the new results have still not been transfered from www2+3 to www.google.com, so how can this traffic increase come so promptly? And once www.google.com is fully updated, can I expect a further rise in traffic?

Also just to add another voice saying Thanks Loads; Brett's 1 year plan is currently in month 3 and working well!

good luck everyone,

Jeremy

Does anybody know when the google dance will end? In about how many hours or days will we know where we are standing on this thing?

I've never seen anything take so much time

Glad that things are going well for most people. SubZeroGTS, I wouldn't worry this early. Also, just a reminder to all that the number of backlinks reported can vary during the update. And we still see the same links as last month even if we don't always report them. I wouldn't worry about that.

Every dance I've seen takes 2 or 3 days to finally settle down.

Each month, the web grows bigger so the dance will probably take longer.

Use the dance tool and look at www2 and www3 and you should get a good indication of where your site will be.

Okay, I've added over 200 pages to my site before the last update. NOw I've went from 76 Backlinks to 24! Why this. I was expecting to have more. All of this work for nothing?!
Btw, how are you seeing the changed pagerank?

GoogleGuy, is there any way to find out what exactly got me penalized? I thought I was in compliance but it appears I broke a rule somewhere, unfortunately without knowing what I did wrong I cant fix it. Thanks

GG That was a quick sleep.

Bit worried about my PR on my personal site which I only launched a month or so ago. Not allowed to download the Google Toolbar at work.

Is it common to start of with a PR0 if you have no links reported (New site still building links) or is due to an early penalty.

Anyway, we will see what the next update brings.

GG, hope you're getting paid when you're here; you deserve it.

Canary, even if I'm up late, I still gotta get up the next day for work. It's hard to get to sleep when your dancing shoes are on. ;) As far as your site: yes, it is definitely normal to start with a gray bar/PR0 and work your way up. If you site is only a month old, that's what is going on. Don't worry. :)

ExtremeExports, comparing backlinks in this index to backlinks in the last index would be comparing apples to oranges, mainly because we're handling expired domains better. Expect some links to drop below the threshold that we report just because there's less PageRank in the system. Also, things always change during the update. I would definitely not worry about the number of backlinks at this stage. A better measure is how many pages we crawled from your site.

Dr Greenthumbs, from what you've said I would guess that this is not a penalty. But drop us a quick email (webmaster@google.com) to ask about it while you wait for the update to finish.

GoogleGuy, thank you for helping with my question, but
all of my backlinks are still there from the other sites. Before my internal linking was included in the backlinks, now I see there is no internal links included. Is this normal, or will they still show up before the dance ends?

OH MY GOSH! Did my site get penalized. Is that why there are none of my internal pages showing as backward links? I wouldn't know what I did wrong. I don't spam or anything like that. This is so scary. :(

Equiano

I believe GoogleGuy has said that pages appear like that if Google are aware of the page but it has not yet been fully crawled.

Would not have thought it would show as a backlink though as if it is not crawled I would assume it did not pick un the links

Google Updates ;) One of my sites has been in G! for three months now. The fun thing is last month I added new content to my site after the update completed and freshy kept coming to my site so the new content reigned with top SERPS suddenly the traffic for those keywords disappeared as the update started beganning.

New results as they come in dont show me for those newcontent keywords, of course its too early to tell and this is only a hobby site so my life doesnt depend on it but I think that the results I had mid-month wont be included this round but when freshy comes out it will be reincluded and then next month the new content will be a part of the full index. :P

ExtremeSports

I believe that backlinks show if the page with the Link has a certain PR - so this could be as a result of a loss of a rank or two of PR - not a penalty.

Canary's got it dead on, ExtremeExports. This is normal behavior--you still get credit for those links even if we don't report them, and links could be shuffling all over the quantum web space right now anyway. Worrying about backlinks during the update is like worrying about something, erm, um, something that you don't need to worry about. :)

Yeah, I used to have a PR 4 and PR5 on all internal pages. I haven't changed my internal link structure, so I must be penalized for some reason.

Googleguy- whats the ''google dance tool''?

Canary

5:03 pm on Mar 7, 2003 (gmt 0)

ExtremeSports

It could be possible that another site that links to your site has lost PR and therefore your pages have lost PR as a result and therefore are not showing as backlinks.

This does not mean you have done something wrong or recieved a penalty.

There are a number of these out there. Hmm...perhaps you should enter that search phrase in Google? ;)

My translation: it ain't over till the GoogleLady sings.
Thanks GG. Now if only we could get that to sink in....

This update was a bummer for me. Only about 80 pages indexed, was hoping for about 1000 (had 480). pr6 to pr5. It is surely my fault though, modified the Rewrite rules of my pages. Will need another month to remap I think.

Haakon, I'd make any changes pretty quickly. We'll probably start another crawl pretty soon. ExtremeExports, I would definitely not worry--it's extremely unlikely that you have a penalty, based on what I've heard.

Okay, I'm gonna try to do official work for a while..
