Electric Shavers

Do any of you guys use them?

Just curious, do any of you chaps use an electric shaver on a regular basis?

I used one about 10 years ago (a remington) and got fed up with it rather quickly because it was uncomfortable to use. The fast moving cutting blades made the protective foil hot and this caused an unpleasant sensation on the face, causing irritation.

Have shavers progressed since then? are they really a viable alternative to wet shaving?

Be glad to get your opinions.

the old discussion blade shavers = tough guys - electric shavers = sissies wright or wrong? isn't really breathtaking imo. i use both systems according to the specific situation.

what about the shower? anyone uses warm water (esp. only)? then you are a "warmduscher" as we say in .de :)

5 pages of replies... and still no mention of

THE CUT-THROAT RAZOR!

My step father used one back in the days when MEN used the cut-throat and wussies used safety razors.

My first ever attempt at removing teenage fluff involved "borrowing" the cut-throat, soap, shaving mug..... and blood, lots of it.

I ending up looking like a left-over from Halloween 3.

a Wilkinson double edged blade in a decades old "twist-and-drop-in-the-blade" razor handed down to me by my grandfather

Ahh yes... I learned to shave with one of those. I still have a scar on my left shin to show for it. ;) But, those plastic safety razors can't do half the job that old twist model did, once you get the hang of it. (And the skin on the face heals a lot better than the shins... so you guys get off easy that way)

Craziest method I ever tried: Couldn't find the twist handle, so I shaved both legs with a double edged blade by itself. :) If you pinch the two short ends together just so, it curves the blade just perfectly to shave one's legs in half the time...

Speaking of the old straight razor, I found my grandfathers recently and was tempted to put it to skin, ..... then I thought to myself life is worth living and I put it away.

The drop and twist system sounds tempting, .....

So, I'll repeat the question:

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO SHAVE?

thanks,
shane

Shane - I'll share, it takes less than a minute - and I have to shave down to my adams' apple, and a bit below.

That includes wetting the face with water, wetting the razor, and shaving.

No need to all that 'foam' or 'gel', which I have bought, have tried, but can't bring myself to spend the extra minute on prep, and minute on clean up. :)

> How long does it take you to shave?

I've never thought to time it. And it's such a relaxing activity I just go into a sort of trance dragging the braun up and down, listening to the weed whacker do its thing. Seems there's always a millimeter left on most of the whiskers no matter how often I go over it and how many contortions I make; puffing out the cheek, stretching the chin. Sometimes it takes all morning. Off and on. Working at the terminal I'll often discover one I missed and... wzzzzzz. Back at it. Takes some discipline to put it away finally.

But alas. The rotten thing just snapped at the foil head the other day and I'll be buying a new one for Christmas. Actually I've been sending out feelers to friends and family. The beard's growing and they're curious. Hehe. We'll see who's worth Toadhall's affection. First one to cough up one of those Panasonic es8003's wins.

Or, it's adventure time. Strap on the 45s, pull on the snake skin Tony Lamas, take the bull whip off the wall, and go buy a Mach 3.

Razor Guard does kept the blade from becoming dull and makes it last

Is this one of those little pyramid things that magically keeps your blades sharp forever? :) The engineer in me wonders how something can keep a blade sharp longer when blades usually lose their edge due to mechanical abrasion during use... And does this stuff affect the little lube strip on the blade holder?

Anybody tried those shaving oils you can get they are suppose to reduce the irritation to the skin from the Electric Shaver.

They smell a bit though…

I am quite tempted to get the one you can use in the shower and dispenses some sort of gel I saw it on the TV a couple of days ago I think its from Phillips.

I've been using a Norelco electric for years. Blades invariably leave nicks on my face no matter how careful I shave. With the Norelco, I can go at it until my face feels almost perfectly smooth and almost never get a nick or irritation.

I tried a Remington once. It just wasn't the same.

I recenly replaced my 4 year old Norelco with a new model... less than $50 and rechargeable. And even though it is far from the top model, the improvement in blades alone make a big difference. A very close shave, no irritation... and I don't even use a lotion (thought I have found applying baby oil to my face in the shower does make for a more comfortable shave).

And another improvement... past rechargable models could not be used with a cord. The cord was for recharging only, so if the batteries died before I finished, I had to whip out the dreaded non-powered blade.

My new Norelco can be used with the cord or without. I may never use a standard blade again. :)

If you are performing this act in the shower, I vote for without the cord. ;)

Use a high end Braun and you will never use a razor again. Get the one with the self cleaner (I wish more things in life came with a self cleaner).
