Just curious, do any of you chaps use an electric shaver on a regular basis?

I used one about 10 years ago (a remington) and got fed up with it rather quickly because it was uncomfortable to use. The fast moving cutting blades made the protective foil hot and this caused an unpleasant sensation on the face, causing irritation.

Have shavers progressed since then? are they really a viable alternative to wet shaving?

Be glad to get your opinions.

They have progressed. Like you, I tried one some years ago and hated it. Then about six months ago I fell under the spell of TV advertising and decided to pick up a Panasonic "Sonic-3" wet/dry rechargable. So for me it's not an "alternative to wet shaving," because I still use "the actual foam," as Shakil put it.

It's great, too, on those days when I'm in a real hurry and just to clean up a little, because I can use it "dry" and in about 90 seconds look not quite so unkempt. But even for a regular shave, for me, I can finish in about half the time using it than using a regular razor... but, in fact, when I want a completely close shave I sometimes still use the Gillette to put a little extra smooth finish on the Panasonic's shave. So, it's not perfect I guess, but certainly much improved over what they were years ago.

I agree with chameleon (you get what you pay for). The "intro" models are built to blow up a week after the warranty runs out and although they cut, they don't really shave. I've been using electric for so long my face goes into shock whenever I use a blade. *Not* a pretty picture!

Yes, they have improved over the last decade. Smaller, lighter, quieter, and cooler. Also more $.

Get a high end model. For whatever reason, I can't get replacement heads for my low-end Norelco at a store. (The higher end models have replacement heads everywhere)

I've had a few electrics, though not for a few years. After I "shaved" with one of those, it would always be necessary to do it again with a blade to get a close shave.

I tried it. The more blades, the faster they get clogged. It's just a toy for people who love to rinse plastic instead of shaving. Maybe people using it are still dreaming to grow a real beard?

Nothing will beat napalm.

My GF made me switch to it from the lawn*mower. Same job, less noise and perfect for cold winters.

Tried using an electric about 30 years ago. I remember the greasy feeling left from the electric shaving lotion, which I guess was supposed to lubricate the shaver and give new life to old zits at the same time. Kinda like dipping your face in salad oil.

No to electric
Yes to Mach 3 - since I first used it, I've been hooked.
(from all the other posts, it seems a favorite - I guess Gillette didn't spend 1 billion or so dollars for nothing :) )

I paid 6.00 for each razer which had the extra blade which had tickets to the movies that the tickets cost 9.50 for here :P

From the sounds of it, am I the only guy here who uses a mach 3 and water?

What's this 'foam stuff'...? Or gel? You mean you put stuff on your face first?

I always though that you wet your face with water -> then use the razor...

This doesn't really help me to choose an new electric shaver. I have tried Mach 3 and although it gives a very close shave, it is somethimes too close for my skin!

How about Remington? Did the guy that now owns the company buy the company because he liked the shavers so much?
