according to Tim Mayer

From ysearchblog:

"This is our second weather report. We will be making changes to the index tonight so you should be seeing more of your pages in the index as well as some fluctuations in the rankings of results from previous searches."

I for one love this open approach that Yahoo have opted for. Tim (if you're reading this) you are definitely scoring points.

In order to see the new results you must be logged out of Yahoo with only 10 results per page.

Boy this is sad...

Yes, Yes and yes.

For well known searchs, sites that MUST BE in the top 10 are not there, but rather sites with wild urls and all of the above from your comment are in all of the top ten spots. Click next, to 10-20, and it goes back to normal.

kamikaze Optimizer I saw what you saw and it cannot stick. It was irrelevant loser sites that would not know what to do with the traffic. Like I said for the main seach terms but not the inverse.

Be good if there was a yahoo data center tool so you can check all dc's at once.

Crush: I agree. I think they loaded the banned sites on a DC and that is what I am seeing. I notice now that when I see the crap, the number of results is about 300,000 vs the normal 2.4 million.

I also am seeing, instead of widgit.com in the number one spot for widgets, I see secure.widget.com/product?php-referralID=spam-guy

And that link goes directly into a shoping cart

Exactly, I have seen a few results like that. How can that dross be more relevant than a heavyweight ontopic site. Ok bed time. Hope it has changed in the morning.

This is like Google Sandbox Phase II. I don't even rank on my own site's name!

The top results on my website name query don't even make any sense. Yikes!

My backlinks are showing high its almost double then what I saw yesterday, apart from this no changes in positions for any of my kw and also no increase in site page indexed.

A Yahoo rep posted on another board that the update was the last day of an accumulated update that took place over the last few weeks.

Fair enough - has been movement over the last few weeks.

I am seeing no changes whatsoever as well. Cleared Cookies and everything.

Dayo_UK,

What board was that?

If the update is finished I guess I'm giving up on Yahoo. I'm just thankful that I've never gotten much traffic from them. It's no wonder Google blew by them and MSN is rapidly catching up.

This has highlighted the need to not rely on organic SERP traffic. If Google had done what Yahoo just did I would be out of business - It's time to get busy!

*** (Wed 6/22)

After going up, up, up the last three weeks, now I am down to where I was three weeks ago (from 16k listings to about 2-3k listings).

Anyone else seeing a sort of revert back to old SERPs?

***

I also am down in MSNSearch too. Ugh!

The keywords I monitor are full of doorway pages now. Definite downgrade in quality.

from the netimperative article:

Tim Frankcom, European head of travel at Yahoo! said: “According to our research, 78% of Yahoo! UK users use the internet to research holidays, so we have invested in the re-launch of our Yahoo! Travel site to give them even more comprehensive choice and information.”

I think there is still some flux, because I just had a visitor that came from the 2nd page of results, and I've been on the 4th page for this term since I can't remember when. (which goes to show how crappy my Yahoo placement is)

Crossing fingers...

I see a couple of things with this update. For me the signs are much like the Google sandbox. Yahoo is showing 650 pages of 850 in their index. The website no longer ranks for its own name or my given name. Two things Yahoo always had straight since the site's beginnings.

The site did very well after the April 1st update, ranking for moderately competitive terms. Nothing big, it just seemed about right to me. I do see a number of spam sites and scrapers in positions 2 through about 7. I'm surprised too, very obvious stuff (like keywords repeated in succession).

The site is PHP based and I just updated the template significantly. Content did not change, just the placement of content on the pages. Perhaps this triggered some kind of "penalty."

nutsandbolts - lot of doorway pages

you right, a lot of doorway pages are for many keywords I watch, simple once too... 2kb page cloacked for Slurp and MSN Bots. User gets redirected to an Adsense Only content. with links to other Dorway Pages, and they eat it like there is no tomorrow...

catch2948,

Yahoo! has had a travel channel for a number of years which includes a primary travel partner. The relationship with <snip> is purely commercial.

The Yahoo! SERPS do not appear to be awash with pages from lastminute's stable of sites for travel related searches.

I really like the idea of a block facility. Does it mean if you come across a nasty spammy site, you can click 'block' and never have to see results for that site again. If so I think that is probably about the best way to clean up the SERPS I can think of.

Our newer site is still only indexed for the home page which is a shame. Is this because of a new site penalty or inefficiency, I wonder.

Argh, I have over 1400 pages of original content, and Yahoo has only indexed 8 so far, including the main page, in the 2-plus weeks since I've been online. And it's so random, too. They basically just pluck 7 random pages off my site. Now if only they would index all, or a little bit more of my site... Then again, if Google will just get their act together and index my site already, I wouldn't care about Yahoo...

Since april slurp has been hit my website almost 6,000 times. Here is the results for site:example.com,

example.com/?M=D - they just updated the cache on this error page
example.com/?N=A - just an error page
www.example.com - www.example.com redirects to example.com

Sure hope this new index isn't up and running yet because if it is then i'm screwed with yahoo.

P.S. I am doing fine with MSN and Google not sure whats going on with yahoo.

IMHO, Yahoo posts notices of "updates" just to make people think they are being progressive. They don't know what the heck is happening any more than we do.

Slurp is a monster, now, and whether it hits your servers hard or not at all, there is no logic one can apply as to whether that will make a difference in the index. It's not just for spidering, anymore, as they now use it to ping advertisers pages, too.

Yahoo changes their rules without notice and without any change to their online docs, so sites that once met every condition could easily be dropped for no discernable reason.

As evidence I point to their major change that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2005 when what used to be standard web page common sense (modest cross-linking to distinctly different site content, for one) was deemed unacceptable and promptly caused any sites with such attributes to be banned. Not penalized ... banned ... which means never to return to their SERPS.

How do I know this? It happened overnight to every single one of our domains (over 30), many of which have been authoritative, industry-leading highly-targeted sites for over 7 years, and all of them are filled with distinctly original content. And no, scraper sites aren't the problem ... it's Yahoo trying to play with the big boys. As soon as they started to do their own algo programming, everything went to s#@t.

Yahoo.
