?

thought they were solid with Google in USA and Overture in Europe.

what makes you think they are going in-house?

http://selfserve.aol.com/ but it has all changed since yesterday. I checked it out because my results were not appearing on aol despite being in the top three positions on google. I was looking for alternate ways to advertise on aol cheaply

If only...

But I am pretty sure they have just signed a multi-year deal with Overture.

Any ideas as to why they have taken the cpc advertising (coming soon) off?

Their prices seem kind of high. Has anyone taken AOL up on this self serve service yet? How's the ROI?

I don't think it's an AOL program. Go to the sign-up page.

Yep, get to the sign up page / and it's "Switchboard" instead of AOL it's a page that is cobranded with AOL on it.

They don't seem to offer CPC advertising, though...

Just got off the phone w/ my AOL rep. They are using switchboard for standard yellowpage listings, and trying to get advertisers to dispaly ads for yellow pages and classifides, which are AOL only, as switchboard has it's own yellowpage ads. They don't have a CPC model, and the sales person sounded confused that I'd even ask any kind of PPC question to them. So doesn't look like AOL will have a CPC model anytime soon.

Yea, when speaking to the reps over there about "PPC advertising" you will probably get a long pauses then a response like, "Let me go talk to my supervisor" and the supervisor will get them to push you the same flat fee advertising model, because they dont' know what PPC is either.

Pretty frustrating to say the least. They are really going to need to turn this type of uneducated ad sales around or else I think they will be in even more financial trouble.

You can buy banners at self serv on AOL that go with keywords. I have several. I bought enough to not have to be self serv. Before you go run out and buy AOL banners they are expensive and terrible. I spent a lot of money and get like 1 click a week.

I had a rep call me a while ago trying to sell me ad space in the yellow pages section of AOL. Uneduacated is an understatement - he didn't even know the sponsored listings at the top of the page came from google adwords.

And is it just me or is it impossible to even find a link to the yellow pages from the aol home page?

I've had 6 phone calls like this so far this week. So far, only one was actually from AOL, the other 5 were from ad companies in Florida who are trying to sell me AOL YP listings for 50% over the actual AOL price.

They'd do better pushing their Yellow Pages listings onto PPC and going after the lcoal search market, before Google/Overture swallow it up and take online Yellow Pages advertisers away from them.

Hell, they could re-sell Google and Overture too them.

But let's be honest, AOL aren't exactly moving forward at the moment, are they. Makes me wonder what moves they might make next year in search/online advertising.
