How to buy cheaper traffic than Adwords?

We've been using Adwords for over a year with good results, except for one tiny little problem: it gets too expensive real fast. We want to keep using Adwords but add a little extra oomph using some cheaper means.

The site I run is oriented towards general buying public. That is we could use pretty much any traffic, as long as it is not adult oriented, yet we do not want under 18 signups either.

I am considering looking into Adbrite, Overture and MSN, but I imagine they will be priced similarly and work rather similarly to Adwords. Yes Adbrite does seem to offer some deals for 0.01PPC traffic, but it is either non-English speaking or teen oriented.

What I am thinking there has got to be some middle ground between the scam artists who sell generated traffic with no value (or probably negative value) and expensive targeted traffic programs such as Adwords.

I thought that expired domain re-directs would be a nice way to generate some traffic, but from my experience those sellers have been scams and actually just bring you scripted traffic, which is useless.

So, what other ways of buying traffic are there?

You can go direct to a publisher or you can try searching Google for other advertising agencies, I don't know if I'm allowed to mention any by name, but there is one agency which acts as a go-between for advertisers and lots of sites.

Thanks, Matt. I guess, there really are no shortcuts, probably best is to go directly to site owners and see what they offer. I am just tired of paying over $0.10 CPC.

I've found that direct Banner Advertising is extremely ineffective, it is much better to use Google's Adwords for banner advertising.
