Im launching a web site in the near future and I wondered what ad schemes are the best. I don't intend to make much of profit but it would be nice if the site could pay for itself. Iv heard of Google Adwords, but does this really pay? What is the best way to make money out of advertising?

Google Adwords is for advertising your site yes, but not for making money directly. Adwords simply brings in the customers to your site, just like the natural SEs do.

What you are looking for is Adsense, this is where you place a bit of code on your side and ads specific to your content appear. You get paid when people click them.

There are other ad management programs you could try involving banners etc, but banners seem to mainly involve impressions (how many times the add was viewed) and so you really need a lot of traffic for that to make anything decent.

The other revenue generating idea you could try is to recommend certain products to your visitors as well as giving them content, for example a link to an ebook on a merchant's site. You would get a percentage of the sale if they bought it through your link.

There's lot of stuff to try, you just need to get experimenting.
