Where to start troubleshooting SMTP service on IIS

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction for troubleshooting. Here's my situation, I switched one of my sites over to another Win2K Server; everything seemed to be working well initially but now it doesn't want to send mail from ASP pages using CDONTS; I've checked the SMTP settings in the IIS control panel, and everything looks correct (I even bounced it off of my other server and the settings are identical); the mail is dumped into the queue folder but never gets sent ....

Any thoughts?

Have you checked if the server actually runs CDONTS and not some other system?

You're probably already aware, but there's a service that needs to be running. I've had it stall, then when restarted, it empties the queue, sending the stuff off to it rightful destination. Sorry, I can't remember the name of the service.

Staffa - Good point... will look into that one.

Ross - is the service you're thinking of the one available through the IIS Control Panel? IF so, I've tried stopping and restarting it to no avail.

Hi,

Are you getting error messages or are the emails just sitting in the que?

They're just sitting in the queue. The SMTP service attempts to resend them at regular intervals with no success.

Have you checked your event logs to see if there's anything there?

There's no other email programs on this server right (ex. iMail)? We once had that problem, iMail and IIS SMTP aren't the best of friends.

Also, how are you sending the emails? VBScript? .NET?

Sorry aghill, out of touch for a couple days. Ummmm I realy cant remember the service, but yeah the IIs control panel sounds likely. Good luck.

Without really doing anything to the computer, it seems to be working again..... ****? I'm not complaining mind you, but it would be nice to know what was going on. I wonder if my ISP had blocked that port? Can they do that? I'm sure they can.... oh well
