okay, this is perhaps a ridiculous question... but what do you think about putting keywords, phrases, or titles on an image driven page (little or no html) in white text on white background (using css) in an area where the user wouldn't see it (white on white), but the search engine would still "read" it?

Run a search on 'Fahrner image replacement' which is kinda what you're getting at (I hope).

If that's not what you mean, then what you're thinking is probably a very bad idea.

VERY interesting! thanks. as a designer and not a programmer, that is quite an interesting solution. it's not however what i was getting at, but does the same thing in a much more sophisticated manner. (i simply meant having html text - keywords, phrases or a title which would be detected by a search engine - in white on a white background somewhere on the page, so that the search engine would read it, but the user would not see it. elementary i know, but wouldn't it work?

Hi shine,

Welcome to Webmasterworld. White text on white background? What century do we live in? This may have worked, 5 years ago. Wouldn't recommend it right now.

Negatory on that idea. Could result in getting kicked out of an index or two (or ten).

Your frustration is understandable - this is obviously a huge issue with flash and image-based sites.

Shine, that's called "hidden text" - if you search the site you'll find plenty of discussion on this topic. As others have noted, it's not recommended.

Maybe ammunition to toss the splash page in favor of a targeted landing page?

hidden text huh? ...if you can think of it, it's already been done... i'll check it out. but, i'd have to agree with you all - guess it's not the way to go.

thanx.
