The reason I ask is because I'm trying to do research on the relation between users searching for a term, and actually coming to our site. For example, how many times has a person searched for the term "school of business" on google. And how many times has that person actually clicked on that link to come to our site? We do have WebTrends, and it certainly provides useful information, but is there anything more I can be doing?
Thanks!
To answer your question in a brief way. Google does not offer something that is identical to what Overture does. WebmasterWorld has tons - as in hundreds of threads - about how to judge keywords and their traffic drawing potential.
Where are they? That isn't so simple. Search and read as there are so many subtleties that it is near impossible to tell you everything you need to know in a single post. ;)
The bottom line is that there is no one tool that will tell you what you're after. There are competiting opinions on the usefulness of WordTracker (keyword popularity tool) and similar tools. Quality information comes from monitoring your logs and building/using tools (like webtrends) that will help you analyze your traffic, sales, page views, etc... to develop that picture of what keywords hit the mark for you. There's simply no one tool that will do this for you.
