up to 1,5 years ago, the typical key- and searchwords for my widget were quite clear, and I got good rankings on it.
However recently, there's a new thing on the market which has NOTHING AT ALL to do with my widget, but unfortunately it is described with more or less the same keywords. MY widget costs some $15.000 - $35.000 and is a very specilized product in use only a few thousand times worldwide. The OTHER widget costs $5-$15 and is a mass-consumer product which sells already millions in only one country!
So of course my formerly pretty good rankings dropped significantly AND I get lots of traffic from people who don't want my products but the others.
Finding different keywords is difficult, but seems to be my only option. However the question is how to educate my (prospective) customers to look for these new keywords themselves. I'm not a Fortune-100 company with a big print-ad-budget for that instance.
Any ideas?
I can see your problem. You sell expensive software for the reprograpgics industry but unfortunately another non-related software uses the same keywords. Without giving keywords away, your software is for Raster Image Processing and the other is for DVD stuff.
(if I am breaking TOS here please snip to bring it back in line)
The other is software for colour copiers but there are the same keywords used when looking for other types of copying software .
I suppose it is a lot like some typing in 'printers'. The search engines don't know whether you are looking for a printer of business cards or a printer for your PC.
I would step back into your prospective clients shoes.
When they type in the keyword(s), something is going to show in the index, let's hope it is yours :)
You need to pay a lot of attention to the <title> and <description> so that it is 100% clear what you are selling. Ensure each page is different and inter-linked. Concentrate on body copy, double check on keyword weighted text. Look at <alt tags> to make sure you have good descriptions.
These are just your very basics.
If you can't educate your searches to change the way they search, you can help make it easier to find you.
I hope this helps.
