Hello,

This is my first post so please don't laugh, i run a couple of school websites which obviously don't need the vast vistors most of you guys need at more business-oriented websites, but i'd still like to be first on google when someone searches with our school name ( replacing the bus company that is currently there :) ).

So a few quickies please...

1. Do i need to put keywords on all pages or can i just put them on the front page? ( I know that the other pages will have different content but i think people will searcg for the site first rather than searching for pages in it )

2. Any suggestions for links that a school could use to boost its rating?

Sorry if this is really basic, but if someone could point me to a FAQ as well i'd really appreciate it, i have been looking but its all still a bit above current level.
(Sorry for being cheeky)

hi Mr_Brutal, welcome to webmasterworld [webmasterworld.com].

first of all, get the name of the school as the domain name, take an .edu domain, too and then put the name as keyword and into the description on the front page. use it in the title-tag and put it in a h1-tag at the first page.

this is all the basic but maybe helps you and it even makes sense for the schools page.

keep in mind, that the highest positions in serps is not that important, if the school is on 2nd or 3rd place and the se displays the description and title of that page, everyone will find what he/she was looking for fast. (even if you 'brutally' want to kick out the #1 ;) )

Hi Mr_Brutal, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

1. The general approach is to have one keyword (or keyword phrase) per page. By optimising each page for a seperate set of keywords you have more pages ranked for search terms which in turn brings you more traffic. So I'd say you just need those keywords on your homepage.

2. Sorry, I don't know the education area at all, but have you got listed in DMOZ yet? That would be a good place to start.

I'd recommend a read through Bretts 26 steps to 15k a day [searchengineworld.com]. I've lost count of the number of times I've read that article, it'll definitely help you get started.

btw, I just noticed you have a framed site - the second result you have in goole is for one of your targetted content pages, which comes up without the navigation in the original surrounding frame - I'd have a look at this. There was an interesting discussion on frames here recently can't find it right now...a site search on frames will bring up some interesting discussions though

<added again>

>take an .edu domain

He's in the UK.

Be mindful about the other activities of the school, does it hire out halls? ... good local business for karate, basket weaving and mother 'n baby groups, foreign language lessons, camera & photography....

If this is the case, place more keyword weight on location halls for hire etc. Schools are grateful for the revenue hiring attracts)

Think about people moving into the area, they may not know the name of the school and will search for location and type of school (primary, JMI etc).

Its okay getting in at number one if someone types in Sir Billy Biscuit but when they are not interested in the Sir Billy Biscuit High School for Persons of Restricted Manners ... it's a different tale.

So ask why someone would search for a school and place the search criteria on that.

Thanks very much, yes i am in the UK and we have a sch.uk domain name that we can use if we want but all our headed letter paper has our current web address on so no change yet :)

Yes your right i do use frames which i'm aware is a big no-no for a lot of people. I have tried to combat this by putting links for sections on the content pages anyway so that google (oh yeah and visitors) can use these.

The link you posted is exactly what i wanted.

Thank you very much

Good point peewhy, i have put my sites into the directory in Yahoo and where the only ones listed there, so searching or schools in our area brings this up - but only in Yahoo, not google of course.
